Telkom have some new banners up on websites admitting that they lied... Check out http://m.2mdn.net/1098193/WeLIED160X600.gif.

Funny thing is, everybody else knew all along. I think we should help them out with their advertising campaign! Give them a few more captions to use on some other banner ads in the future.

Some things like...

"We Lied... wanting to use more than 3GB per month isn't actually all that excessive"

or

"We Lied... our International bandwidth isn't used to capacity and we just don't like sharing"

Uhh, I just got that ad as well on the news24 page. They start with "we lied", followed by "DSL 1024 is not the fastest", then "DSL up to 4MBps is - blah blah go to bestbroadband.co.za "

Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni metro police were late on Friday night

What's new?

This advert could be seen as a complete mockery of the AASA (or whatever the acronym is).

Just another reason to block adds - if they, or anyone for that matter, thinks I'm going to waste any of my cap on ads they've got another thing coming.

Pity everyone doesnt disable ads as a protest for a month and let the advertisers know why. Let them kick up a fuss too! Distribute a MyADSL Hosts File :D

i don't think it's fake. here's where it goes:

http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/home_reduced.html

now we just have to see how long it takes to happen, if at all.

We Lied. In our "thebestbroadband" campaign we said that DSL 1024 was the fastest broadband service in SA, in fact 4mbps is! And it's going on trial.
All Telkom DSL 1024 customers will get to experience internet access speeds up to four times faster than the fastest broadband speed available. We are testing the new 4mbps speed at the DSL 1024 price.
DSL 1024 customers do not have to apply to be upgraded as Telkom will do so automatically. If the trial proves successful the Up to 4Mbps service will replace the DSL 1024 service at no additional cost.
The profile for the Up to 4Mbps service changes to: Downstream: minimum is 640kbps and maximum 4096kbps Upstream: minimum is 256kbps and maximum 384kbps Customers who are unable to connect (sync) at 4096kbps due to factors such as line length or quality will be accommodated down from 4096kbps in 32kbps decrements, but not lower than 640kbps, until the service connects (sync's successfully).

yowsers. just did a line speed test at:
http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/speed1.html

and got these results:

Your line speed is approximately 408000 Kbps or 50000 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Results:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 0.01 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 408000 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 50000 (kiloBytes/second)

woohooo :D

HI all,

I didn't read the all thread but it seems to me that you guys have no clue on the concept of advertising.

When they said that 1024 was the fastest, in fact (at that point in time in South Africa it was, 4Mbts was not tested) it was.

The admission that they lied is in this instance in their favour. :p

If that is a legit banner then they are promoting themselves the right way.

When they offer 8Mbts, they can once again say that they once again lied cant they?

Think about it.

seeing as how telkom are the masters of quoting out of context

"We lied." - Telkom

@bwana - really like the adblock idea - could be an extremely effective way of getting attention if it is a concerted campaign for a month...mebbe register scrapthecap.co.za :)p) with simple instructions on how to block adds and save your bandwidth

+ a message to advertisers explaining how telkom's bandwidth control is holding back onine advertising
