I am a Technikon student with not too much money to spend. I am in need of a broadband sollution seeing as 56k dial up with Telkom is very unreliable and constantly disconnects. It just isnt worth all the hassle.

Could anybody maybe inform me of the costs of Telkom ADSL or any other cheaper broadband sollution (excluding ISDN)? Is there no way of getting discounts for ADSL? I keep getting different oppinions and prices from people and would like a accurate estimate... For me, the cheaper the better, as long as its 24/7 connectivity with bout 128k connection, but anything will do really [:I]

Couldnt Telkom have some pity on poor students who dont have rich parents?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

R680 plus ISP(250 to 300)- Monthly
R440 Installation plus Modem at R1000 or so. Once off cost.
Hardly an option for a students pocket Im afraid.

These prices and other issues is why people belong to MyADSL. We are to say the least not happy and a bit peeved off.

Could you share your connection with other students and divide the cost perhaps.
And dont forget the 3 gig cap.

You should post this question to Telkom themselves IMO.

ure a tech student then downloads is life if im right.

rather wait till middle march then u can hopefully get a sentech wireless connection for 650 and its 24/7 but only 128k also theres no cap on the line.
so theres
128kbs for 650
256bs i think for 850
and 512kbs for 1400

Proud South african rip offs.

Well, the sharing of the costs is a definite must. Even if I opt for the 128k sentech mywireless connection. The bandwidth isnt of such importance as the ping. I dont download much but I am a avid gamer, so a slow connection with low pings would be great!

Does the Sentech Mywireless connections offer acceptable pings?

Since I saw the pricing of the Telkom services I was appalled to find out that my friends in the Netherlands and in England get SO MUCH service for SO LITTLE money! And as I understand it there is no way for South Africa to get rid of Telkom and the monopolising ways. Why is this? R1000 a month for DSL with a cap??????? My overseas friends laugh at all of us...

And telkom laughs at us while rubbing their wallets.

Im afraid, I thought SA had stepped into the future with ADSL, but it is a big dissapointment for power users. If you browse a few websites and download the odd driver, 3 gigs is OK. Your pings to local gameservers on ADSL is acceptable, but can be worked on still.

The wireless guys are working on the ping for gaming. So hang on.

I must say that its a disgrace to say the least that a student wanting a broadband connection has to have wealthy parents. When else does a student need the internet than now while he is studying. A student cannot wait for Telkom to come out of the dark ages.

Im not sure what to tell you mate. Can your parents afford ADSL or Wireless for you. As that is the quickest solution. Otherwise you will have to join the line of disgruntled and ripped off SA Consumers.
Pity. Life is so short.

I unfortunately do not have rich parents [:I] Unless you are rich and willing to addopt a 21 year old!

Only sollution to get decent services from a telephone company would be to leave this retarded country. For now the dial up will have to do...

Thank you very much for answering my many and stupid questions. It is greatly appreciated [:)]

No Problem.

You might be 21, but your questions are valid and not stupid at all.
You are our future generation. All I can say is this to you. Dont be part of a generation of people stuck in a old rut.
Telkom being our prime example of a an Old Fossil that wont die. Remember one day when you are older to look at the bigger picture and to the benefit of the whole community. Our community that helped build Telkom up to what it is today is been used against us to carry on the old philosophy we are trying to get rid of in this country. They are just putting up their defenses as they know their jobs might be on the line. They will keep trying to paint a picture of self image promotion as they go into their dieing days. It is only history repeating itself over and over again. Just try to learn from this scenario as you go into life and not make the same mistakes that these so called wise men are doing. Where their is smoke their is always a fire. Use your gut feeling as they will be your lead in life. Dont believe in the crap they they are trying to spin us.

BTW, cant you ask for a student loan or perhaps if you stay in the dorm, get them to install ADSL and share the costs.
