Telkom ADSL Vs Telkom WCDMA - Your thoughts on which is better

Hi

So I applied for a 2mb ADSL line from Telkom. The Telkom techie comes out and investigates and reports back that he cannot install the line as the telkom lines ends 3-5 meters outside my house.

I have 2 options
1. Go the WCDMA route
2. Get a contractor to dig up my neighbours garage entrance paving all the way to my house and run the cable underneath. (R500- R1k)

I quite scared of going WCDMA with telkom as I have an 8.ta 10gb package and the internet is unbearable.

Im not sure how WCDMA works but I do see it on my 8.ta GUI in the bottom corner when it varies from HSPA to WCDMA to Edge (Which EDGE has recently climbed to the top of this hierarchy)

So, should I fork out for the contractor and get ADSL or get the WCDMA?
Motivate if possible.

Many Thanks

ADSL

With prices dropping it will become an inevitability.

If you're able to get a +4Mb line from your exchange and your neighbour's agreeable I'd spend the money for the trenching.

Testing the waters with the 2mb line. I wanna keep the DSTV and if we find the ADSL line is good, then will upgrade to 4mb and cancel DSTV...Im not a sports person.

Gonna have to elaborate more on this, pictures and diagrams might help.

Well to the property. Another 7 meters to the house but then its inside my yard, which I dont mind digging up.
If it's an underground duct you need to provide it to the edge of your property (with a draw-wire). Telkom must do the rest.

My neighbour has a man hole drain on the side of door garage. I live opposite . The paving is red brick and acts as a road where houses face each other.

Our estate doesnt allow for any poles to be erected, everything has to run underground. So, from manhole drain all the bricks will have to be removed and fit a PVC pipe with telkom cable from there to the wall of my house.

Thats the best I can describe it.

Pay the sub R1000 and get it in and done properly. The last thing you want is a dodgy connection in a few months/years due to the run being bad.

Wireless will never be as solid as a fixed line, especially for video which you are looking to use it for.

Thanks.

I've decided to go that route.

It'll only be worth it if you plan on going with a either a high cap or uncapped account, on a 2mbps+ line. Then you're getting your money's worth. Otherwise there are cheaper wireless alternatives. If it was me, I would check with my neighbours what their line speeds are like, and attenuation, etc. It's no use spending all that money, and it turns out that the max stable line you can get is 1mbps or 2mbps, due to the distance from the exchange, or poor quality of the copper.

If you do get them to run the cable, make sure to ask them to put in at least 2 pairs, or perhaps even 4 pairs. You don't want to go through the hassle of digging everything up again because there is a problem on the only pair of copper in the ground. Pay the little extra if needs be. Oh, and be nice to the Telkom techies, and they usually respond in kind. Don't blame them for Telkom's problems. They're just there to do a job, and arent responsible for the ****ty decisions made higher up.

Hi

The Telkom Techie was cool.
Pissed at my body corp, which provided the line right almost to my doorstep and put an empty box in my kitchen.
Yes, thats a good idea, I will get them to run 2 lines to my house.

Things aren't made like they used to be....but thats a rant for another day.
