lol... That's a brilliant point. I don't use my phone line for anything else, at all. I find it hilarious that I'm paying for the rental of a phone line and a DSL line - which are the SAME line.

Ahh well... As hopeless as this may sound, I still have my heart and faith set on Neotel. I can only hope they hurry it up.

I long for the day when this happens to telkom :

Telkom is out of touch, not just their marketing.

Point is their product offerings are inferior and lags the word. ADSL in SA is far behind what is available. They get away with it because SA in general is not Internet savvy yet.

Imagine how many jobs would be created if SA had a vibrant Internet savvy industry. Every Tom, Dick and Harry would have some internet business. Anyone could have one. There would be no discrimination. And many jobs would be created, by self starter type.

But no Telkom, it's owners and regulator/s are likely not seeing the damage they're causing. Mainly because they're not Internet savvy albeit in charge and shouting the odds and unaware.
Put it that way... if you got goverment backing (turning a blind eye) for you to make as much money (monopoly) as possible... then why would you care about the public.

Telkom knows they are untouchable until the day we get true competion (no issues from ministers that wants a cut of the pie etc... protecting Telkom)

Telkom will now have to offer their new Telkom Can't Do Broadband package.....:D

No I yhink it will be called "Up To" Broadband, and will offer you options on whether you want to download a movie over 6,12 or 24 months, if you have signed a contract.

Actually I believe that instead of forcing them to withdraw the advert, they should be forced to deliver what they advertise.

Mr Moorad has just been nomintated and awarded my favourite person of 2007 award. Well done.

Yay, now I won't have to sit through those ads, mumbling telkom lies, telkom lies and getting squiff looks at the movies anymore!

Or does it mean that when I go to movies and they show it before, I have the right to complain and demand they remove it?

The best bit from Telkom that I've heard in a long time in that article was :

In its submissions to ICASA, Telkom clearly stated that "Telkom's ADSL service was never intended for bandwidth-hungry applications, such as gaming or online trading."

Now then, Email and Website surfing (as long as flash isnt involved, video, or other rich HTML content) is what ADSL is about? And what do they classify as Online Trading? Online Gambling? Shopping?

Rediculous

It would be really sweet if there was a bannner placed on the TV ads, something like "A message from ASA: Telkom lies in it's advertisements" or something like that, so people would actually know why ads disappeared rather then just thinking that Telkom decided it was time for a new ad.

I think that this is an excellent idea, and maybe something that we should actively campaign for!

“Depending on the activity (movies music, gaming, education, communication, business or on line gaming) the onus is on the customer to ensure that there is sufficient bandwidth to cater for such activity.”

WTF! How can they say this? They provide only 1GB with their accounts... and the point is that you can't do movies (possibly music and gaming too) in SA because of Telkom's ISP prices.. :(

I'm all for stopping Telkom from misleading the public BUT what's this "20gb" a month needed for daily online games? Unless you're DOWNLOADING the whole game or playing some strange new game I can't imagine this being possible, why a full day of GW takes less than 50megs for me most of the time.

Entropia Universe can easily use up 20 gigs if you're playing it every day. It's filled with TV adverts and shows and stuff (which admittedly, you can turn off). Also, let's not forget Second Life...

Plus, if you're into trying new MMORPGs, etc regularly, www.mmorpg.com has a list full of free-to-play and pay-to-play that require downloading and don't come in boxes or retail outlets.

Point being - gaming in itself can easily consume 20GB a month be it full-scale downloading or even simply playing MMORPGs. Granted, it's dependent on the game. And strange... I recall being capped out before the end of the month pretty quickly when all I did was JUST play Guild Wars... *shrug*

Perhaps it was on your first install of GW? Or just after an expansion was released? Considering they make you download the new files wether you've purchased the expansion or not that could do alot to your cap.

I'll grant this "Entropia Universe" could do it considering the tv ad factor, and perhaps poopoo like Second Life (which I haven't tried due to the already mentioned it being a piece of poo factor) but as for the games at mmorpg that heavy cap usage is, as you mentioned, a result of downloading the whole damn game itself and not merely playing them. I really just can't see any game using up 20gigs in the PURE play aspect but since I'm running on 64kBs MOST of the time I suppose it'd take forever to hit those kinda marks anyway :/

Played GW ages ago... Was an avid fan for a few months and then sought better prospects. Either way... 20GB isn't a lot at all - especially not when there's more than one person in a household. Which goes a long way in suggesting how pathetic a 3GB cap is... let alone 1GB...

That particular part is hilarious. The onus is on the customer to ensure...

No, the onus is on the service provider to ensure the customer has the means to indulge in these activities. The onus is not on the customer to pay an arm and a leg for a service and then marginalize his connectivity like a child who's only allowed 1 sweet before lunch.

I may have some problems with my wireless with regards to good connectivity to Yahoo games and Pogo games, but I'll rather take the capless service than to support Telkom any further.

I was also thinking 20GB is a bit much just for gaming... but regardless the point is that 1Gb is far too little for anything they advertise.

Not if you host a match, hosting takes alot of bandwidth. They estimated that hosting 1 match of Gears of War on the Xbox 360, requires 500 MB's. They shouldn't cap the service at all, even if they offered a 50 GB cap per month for 400 rand, I'd still not even fathom joining Telkom again.

What's the logical explanation for capping the service? there is no logical explanation for capping the service other than to gain more money from it. To state "we are the only Telecommunications company in South Africa with a line from here to timbucktoo" and not capping ISP's will give high latency is a bunch of rubbish. With the amount of extortion that company gets per month they could have already set up several such lines.
