Hey guys,
well I got a call today saying that they managed to get a port on the exchange and my line is now ADSL enabled and it was apparently ADSL enabled since the 5th of Oct

Now when I applied for ADSL I remember they were giving away free modems to customers who did the SIO (self install option)

Now I just want to know if they still give away the free modems and I read a while ago on the forum that they ran out of stock of the modems they give away for free?

So is this true? Are they STILL out of stock and do they still give away the free modems for people who take the SIO option?

Thanks, Psy

Only with a contract do you get a free modem, the free modem offer without a contract stopped at the end of August.

I'm sure someone on the forum will know which is a cheap decent modem as I have no idea which is the best for the price, I got the Marconi Premium Combo from Telkom when it was still free without a contract.

If you are looking for new or secondhand cheap wireless ADSL routers - search on Bidorbuy using the word router. Otherwise look for a Netgear or a Billion router from one of the online retailers like Digital Planet or PCMall etc.

If you applied for a Self Installation Option before the end of August, then Telkom is obligated to supply you with a free Router. Take your ADSL installation reference number down to your local Telkom Direct Shop and go demand one!!! It is only the SIO's which are ordered after the and of August that do not qualify for a free Router.

@PsyCLown, Yeah I missed that in your sig, you applied on the 18th of August so as Lunchbox says "Telkom is obligated to supply you with a free Router", you have proof of when you ordered it so tell them to hand it over asap.

The Telkom Direct shops aren't aware of the SOI special that lasted till the end of August(or maybe they're just ignorent like everyone else that works there), cause I asked them if they can give it in the meantime before I have the line was installed, and the smugg lady(her father probably owns skelmkom, cause the bloody attitude, sheesh) told me confidently that it's only available with contracts ... well, it was advertised on the website too, so I hope she swallows  ...

and that, was my 1st post ... after always coming to this site, and just checking wot people got to say ... :)

so ... I got the same prob ... wonda if they're gonna gimme the modem, cause some idiot changed my order in the background, and now I got a bill of R499 for the install, which I did myself (obviously duuuuh ... there was no modem) oh, and no modem ...

can't wait to call the accounts dep. I actually got 2 courtesy calls since the install, can u believe it, they actually do that there, and when I start telling them about the bill and start asking questions, then they just try to get off the line as quickly as possible, and ask me to call the accounts department when I get the letter with my bill ... hehehe ... so I got the bill today ... can't wait for tomorrow .... that's why I'm still awake ... :D

Ur reference number includes the date of application, just show them that number and they must give u a free modem if its before august.

If they dont agree, ask to speak to someone with more authority...

@PsyClown: If possible try to get a free Zyxel IAD P2602 Voip router. In addition to the Voip features this router also supports L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol) which you may require if you ever consider purchasing an uncapped account. Take a look at the uncapped offerings at www.xdsl.co.za if you want to know more. I don't think that any of the other Telkom routers offer both of these features.

Im going to go with the Mega 200 as it supports half-bridge so I can use RouteSentry in Vista :D

I also highly doubt I will be going uncapped any time soon :(
Just costs too much. If I can affor to go uncapped then I will definatly invest in a decent D-link router 1st :D

Thanks anyways :p

Thanks guys.
Got my router this morning (the Mega 100WR2....the one I wanted)
It was SOOOOOO EASY as well. I was amazed! :D

Thanks for all your help. Up and running. The SIO was very easy....but thats because I read about all the problems or it would of been rather confusing especially verifying my line.

Thanks to you guys I didnt have to spend extra money on a router! :D

Thanks, Psy

6 year old thread necro.

It should be pretty straight forward. Did not have any issue when I did my self install a few years ago. May be others that had issues can point out the things to look out for.
