Telkom and DoC in 'conflict' about broadband pricing

Telkom.... Will never change... Neither will Government

I think there is more than one underlying problem here, namely Telkom and the other is Government. Sadly the problem with Government is that the people running the departments dealing with the Telecoms sector do not appear to have the experience and qualifications to complete their jobs with any sort of competence. While they are getting paid regardless of performance and while the Government has any form of interest in the sector, nothing will be done and therefore nothing will change as the Government has a starting point of a 'Biases stance' and not an objective one. This all said, if Government really wanted Telkom to fall into line, it would merely be a matter of instruction rather than suggesting Telkom to change and being laughed at. I mean, the only reason Telkom don't want to change is because their interests are affected here.

They continually state we should not be comparing them to 1st World countries but rather to perhaps Australia but recent comments from them state they compare them self’s to 1st World countries and no mention of Australia.

With Neotel coming into the market, I am not convinced there will be much difference to Telkom; you only have to look at how many delays they have had. They are relying on infrastructure built for ‘Transnet’ etc so this being said, the infrastructure is not purpose built for public telecoms access. (Just a thought for consideration). Everyone is getting excited about a second operator but surely it can’t be that exciting if ‘Telkom’ are not concerned.

However, I am still waiting for the day that Broadband (True) access comes into a realistic price range as I refuse to be a victim of extortion. I mean, if you have a look at what packages are available, for a real picture of broadband you looking at say R1,400 pm. I saw fibre options available for R2, 200 pm. I am pretty sure for the extra expense it will be better to go for the fibre option. Strange how the prices don’t vary that much. For now, as frustrating as it is most of the time, Virgin Data is the best option. Not ideal, but then who would really want to give Telkom money?

The only thing Telkom have to change to be brought back into reality for Broadband offerings is to remove entirely there so called ‘ADSL line charge’ as although all their other prices are still steep, they would in affect be brought back into comparable prices else where.

This is almost a lost cause.

It is DoC responsibility to provide affordable communication, be it cellular, broadband or otherwise.

Fact is that government is bunch of spineless deadbeats and until that changes we are fraked.

so fellas in mean time stock up on kyjelly.

ROFL, TELKOM have nothing to worry about.
It should be abundantly clear by now that anything Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri says should really not be taken seriously at all.

Aliens have abducted Ivy and they're warming us up for April 1st.

Or it's really Ivy and she also thinks that Government is discriminating against its very own people.

Perhaps she heard that Telkom refuses to roll out infrastructure in poor areas.

Or that BT is making a killing off cheap ADSL and Telkom can do the same to boost profits (although keeping up with the demand is clearly beyond them).

Either way it doesn't sound like Ivy's usual statements.. would love to get my hopes up but they've been dashed so many times in the past.

Good 'ol Ivy, making possitive statements... hmmm, somethings not right... :D

A typical political speech.
Nothing specific and nothing definate. All empty promises.
In other words blatant lies just to play the part of the concerned mother for the poor for the benefit of a political party.

Enough said lady, and sorry for being synical but action speaks much louder than words.

And lies even louder...

Look at who she was talking to : http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/business/2007/0703201042.asp

Anyone have any doubt that the vast majority of the ITC industry hates Telkom, ICASA and the DoC?

She was addressing what was basically a hostile crowd and telling them what they wanted to hear.

MyADSL said:
Unfortunately action, and not the promise of action, is what is needed and this is generally where the problem lies.

Expect more inaction...

“This means that, in addressing the cost of communications, we have to ensure broadband is not a scarce commodity, or a commodity to be enjoyed by a few who are privileged by either income and/or geographic location,” Matsepe-Casaburri said.
fact of the matter is this was the policy in 1996 and they have manage to stuff it up royally and are continuing to do so

The thing with Ivy... When she does say or do something its something like this :

' Cheap broadband for R99 a month uncapped asof April 1st. '

come april 1st...

' err.. cheap broadband now for R1099 a month uncapped at 33.6k asof April 1st 2020'

Blah, blah, fish paste!!!!

We've heard this all before. She should learn to talk with her signature on legislation and regulation docs and not through her @rse.

Surely the oxygen currently consumed by Ivy could be better served elsewhere?

Ivy needs to upgrade to Version 2.0. We need a friendlier user interface. Possible an open source environment where every one can contribute. Hell, I'm even willing to pay an annual license fee, as long as the damn thing works

Ladies and gentleman : Ivy has spoken!

Wait for it...
Wait for it...
Wait for the change....

Can you see the change happening?

Nope, me neither.

Telkom and the Doc is two things , telkom and gov is the same thing.the gov controls all, and telkom is king.

figure it out

What conflict? Telkom charge extortion level prices and government has sat back for the past 5 years and let them.
