Openserve to separate from Telkom

Telkom has announced that it will legally and structurally separate its wholesale and networks division Openserve from the rest of the business on 1 September 2022.

Openserve operates Telkom’s over 160,000km national fibre network, and its old copper telephone lines.

So the plan is then spinoff Telkom Mobile from Telkom and then for Openserve and Telkom Mobile merge while Telkom dies in the corner?

Under the deal, Telkom would pay a R200-million fine for anti-competitive behaviour between 1999 and 2004, and 2005–2009, and functionally separate its wholesale and retail divisions
What did Telkom do in 2004-2005 that suddenly made them non anti-competitive?

Anyway, I wonder if this is a death knell for Telkom. I can only imagine OpenServe is their only profitable business unit.

This was a real issue up to ~2010 when Telkom SOE had a government monopoly on cabling in ZA.

Regulation changes (Legal Cases) and Telkom inefficiencies, Telkom high prices, Telkom arrogance allowed DFA & Vumatel & SEACOM to break the Telkom monopoly.

Today OpenServe is just another FNO.

Who cares about competition?

Macro vs game vs Dion wired?
All the TFG stores? Markham, Foschini, @home and now Coricraft, the list can go on and on but it's all going to the same pyramid and out the country.

So what is the point of the competition Commission? Making sure remgro has no competition?
Or years later joining a conversation with a useless remark because it's already 10 yrs too late.

We will end up like those people in black mirror.
Everybody working 24/7 for credits while watching ads and making sure the government is comfy

Making sure Burger King can't be sold to Whites.

If Telkom LTE prices go up as a result of all this restructuring / possible or probable sale to MTN, then I might be "forced" to get Frogfoot fibre (already have a point installed in the house).

Hope by then Openserve's available in my area, but if MTN get hold of them, then their pricing might increase as well.

Uncertain times ahead, but hopefully within 6 months we'll know exactly what's potting.
