Have just received first Telkom bill after installing ADSL... WOW quite a shocker[:0]; so would just like to get general consensus before shouting at Telkom...

Had existing ISDN line (which I wanted to keep)... but now they've charged me for installing ADSL (+-400), which is fine.. but have also charged me for normal line installation (+-240).. but I didn't need normal line as I already have ISDN?? They've charged me for ADSL rental (680 which I expect) but also for normal telephone rental!!

Can I have and ADSL line without a normal phone line?? THat's what I asked for?

Thanks in advance for any replies...

You must have a normal phone line. No way you can get around that.

Scary that first bill. Don't worry, that's the easy part, it doesn't get any better in the following months. As you can see by the copy of my last three months statements.

<font color="blue">April 24, 2004 May 17, 2004 Telkom NOT_PAID 1,535.51
May 24, 2004 June 15, 2004 Telkom NOT_PAID 1,401.56
June 24, 2004 July 16, 2004 Telkom NOT_PAID 1,338.63 </font id="blue">

The nice thing about Telkom is that, according to there "Online Statements", I don't ever have to pay. Yet I'm still connected. [:D]

Don't worry. The bill will settle down to a nice R950 or so each month (if you don't make any voice calls).[:D]

when i got my first bill after installing adsl, it was on the low side of 4 grand...but only had to pay 2000 and summing. Is there anyone out there who can actually understand the abortion telkom calls a bill??

I honestly thought that the rather exorbitant R680.00 adsl line rental and R404.00 installation would include the standard analogue stuff.

I have a telephone cable and wallbox in my apartment, but I’ve never activated / used it. Can I therefore expect a R404 + R240 installation charge and a R680 + R71 line rental?

+- R1400 without ISP charges?

Words fail.

As far as i can gather, Telkom's billing goes up the creek without a paddle if you don't use voice.
I had ADSL for about 6 months. One day, in about April, i couldn't connect. I phoned them and they told me that the line had been disconnected in July last year!?! [:0]

I then got a phone call on my cell phone that my account was in credit and that i shouldn't make any more payments. With my last bill, which said the account was paid in full, i got a cheque from Telkom for the amount i was 'in credit' for.

Last month i got an sms from lawyers saying they had been hired by Telkom to track down outstanding funds!! I faxed them a copy of the cheque that Telkom had sent me and they went away. Bizarre.

Well to be fair the reason you were billed a normal line installation is that Telkom had to install another line because you kept your ISDN. When you get ISDN Telkom converts your normal analoge phone line to a digital line, however ADSL uses a analoge line so Telkom had to install a brand new line to install ADSL for you. You have now 1 analoge line and 1 digital line - 2 seperate lines hence the billing.

If you have a specific print ad that doesn't mention terms and conditions, file a complaint with the ASA: write to complaint@asasa.org.za

Also point out that the Telkom rates page doesn't mention the phone line rental.
http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page?_pageid=1435,72102&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&paramURL=/pls/portal/docs/page/adsl/prices.jsp
It isn't mentioned on their Terms page either, or their Requirements page

Nor does their press release
http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page?_pageid=554,72063&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL&paramURL=/pls/portal/docs/page/news/article_675.jsp

Let us know what happens. BTW, I have phoned both 10219 and 10217 and only been told about the line rental once I specifically asked.

please note that it is possible to run ADSL over ISDN and the exchanges support this its not a product they offer so they by default install a analogue line ... fighting them on this is like farting against thunder ...

i eventualy gave in ...
