Telkom charging for callouts now?

Hi guys,

Just had a tech get off the phone with Telkom whom informed us they are now charging for callouts? R304 for home and R700 for business lines, irrespective if it is a fault on their end? According to the Telkom call center these costs will be added to your telkom bill and debited with the next billing run.

Is anyone able to confirm this from Telkom or from personal experience?

Thanks in advance.

That is bad, what is stopping them from creating faults on their network and charging you for it?

I'm only aware of "unnecessary callout fees". First I hear of this...

I'd just be like **** you, I'm not paying until it's fixed. (If you have a debit order then there is something wrong with you)

+1. This needs to be exposed and nipped in the bud ASAP. Can't wait to get away from these chops.

It's always been that if the fault is on your end, indoor wiring onwards, they can bill you. If it's on their end then I don't see how they can bill you to fix their own infrastructure.

I am under this same impression. Never been billed for anything from them.

This makes no sense. Reason being is that 90% of visits from technicians (in my experience) are usually fruitless anyway. They go back to the exchange and report that the fault was resolved and yet the problem persists. Unless they do a check with me to confirm that the technician fixed the problem to my satisfaction, they will not receive a cent from me for callouts

Not even that, since indoor wiring was theirs too including the jack, most of customer faults were limited to the telephone or the modem being faulty.

Thought I was imagining myself when I phoned them.

After they SMS'ed me to say lines are down in our area

Yeah it used to be all indoor wiring was theirs up to the jack but that changed many years ago. They now stop at the black cable coming into your house.

So they told you the same thing as OP, you pay irrespective of where the fault is?

Last time I had a fault they said the same thing to me. Never got a bill though, I think they're just leaving out the part that states if the problem was not on their side.

So does this mean that for those of us that have the Telkom wiring inside our house, that we don't to pay if it's a wiring issue?
