Telkom doubles down

Telkom has informed shareholders that it will continue its legal fight against the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) over its spectrum auction.

Icasa concluded its spectrum auction on 17 March 2022, with South Africa’s mobile network operators pledging R14.4 billion to acquire new radio frequency spectrum.

"Telkom said it already leads the market with its fixed wireless access service"

"The 20MHz of 800MHz (which they successfully won) once available, will enable more efficient network deployment, increased coverage"

"we were constrained in our ability to acquire the amount of spectrum that we need to compete effectively,” Telkom stated"

Dear Telkom, stop acting like my wife. You cant have EVERYTHING.

Nuanced, Telkom, sure they are bad, but the rest are bad too and this just looks like one cabal is paying more for PR than the other cabal, in neither case is the public getting the truth.

Spin spin is all we see at the moment.

Reports have stated Telkom just wants to bog this process down in litigation to protect its advantage in regards to spectrum. What legitimate reason do you think they have to prevent their competition getting a fair amount of 5G friendly spectrum?
We are not part of his inner circle of superior legal understanding.

Yes, you are right. We should also all be using the Post Offices to send each other letters and not argue on an online forum.
A completely uneducated response.

Perhaps the fact that the others can use their acquired spectrum while Telkom can't. 5G isn't everything.

Telkom likes to make its problems everyone else's problem, the days of Telkom having a monopoly on everything are long gone.

Telkom demanded sub GHz spectrum, Telkom bid for and was awarded sub GHz spectrum, it's time for Telkom to pay up and start rolling out services with that spectrum (presumably it will be in rural areas).

Sour grapes. Telkom has had more spectrum that Vodacom and MTN and still couldn't make a dent in their market share. Capitalism baby, not Communism is King.
Yes they've had more spectrum than anybody else, spectrum they couldn't use to rollout effectively. The others have way more spectrum in the sub 1GHz range which enabled them to provide the coverage they have and gain the foothold they did.

Yes they got the spectrum, which they can't use because it's still occupied because of Isucka's numerous blunders. The agreement is in any case they will only pay once they can use that spectrum.

You could build a whole national wide wireless network on the 3.x spectrum they have. I'd take that any day, thank you very much.

Haven't followed this is as much as I should. What's the primary issue?
The spectrum is still being occupied, there is no clear date when you can actually use it, and government has failed to properly proceed with the digital migration for decades now.

Not a very good one, range would be bad, you'd need a lot of cell towers, it's not going to be very economical.
