And they call this news. SAIX has been offering 128 Kb ISDN dial-ups for almost 2 years now, most of the other service providers simply resell this package. World Online is one of the ISPs that resell 128 Kb/s ISDN connections, guess what the dial in number is - 086000SAIX. I will give them one thing, they are cheaper than World Online. I can see another ICASA complaint coming from ISPA.

From the article:

"The package offers unlimited access to the Internet with no monthly cap or any other restrictions."

R22.248 x 2 = R44.96 per hour (Dual channel ISDN) is definitely what I'd call a "restriction". That's about R8600 or 1178 US dollars ! per month, even with full utilisation of the the R7 plan.

Later,

I may be wrong but I find this too coincidental.

Follow this line of thought:

- Users have been asking 'when is ADSL going to be available in SA?'
- ADSL is introduced but a) its expensive b) its limited in use c) its capped
- 128k ISDN is introduced and its not limited, nor is it capped and worst of all it is advertised as unlimited and uncapped.

As I said I may be wrong but this feels like long range marketing strategy. ADSL would be a relatively cheap Diginet or ISDN replacement if it didn't have the limitations, to save the potentual of ISDN and Diginet markets ADSL is crippled, however to satisfy those users who wish to download large volumes of data and have no port prioritisation 128K ISDN is introduced.

Net result : Peoples demand for a ADSL option is met, ISDN and Diginet markets are secure and a new ISDN market is created.

Naah I am probably just seeing things, right. [:p]

Or follow this line of action

I complain about declining service levels to my ISP
The ISP suggests ISDN
I install ISDN - install cost + modem ~ R4000
Good performance for 6 months
ISP introduces 100% increase in fees for ISDN users
Plus the Phone Bill is excessive
ISP suggests ADSL
Install ADSL - install cost + modem ~ R5000
Good performance for 6 months
Telkom introduce shaping
ISP suggests 128K IDSN

The catch is that Telkom downgraded the ISDN line to Analogue to install ADSL. So I now need a new line installed ~ R1000 if I wish to use my existing modem and go back to the excessive phone bill, on top of the excessive ADSL charge, just to get my low bandwidth applications to work again.

On top of that my Phone bill is still in excess of R2000 per month and I can’t use the PABX facilities, that I am still paying for, without ISDN being reinstalled. Telkom have said that IDSL (ISDN over ADSL) will be released next year, at a cost, to existing users.

Telkom and Saix are sitting on a gold mine (and a renewable one at that).

Cheers
Chris

I see you are beginning to understand Telkom's business strategy

Hey,

This is a quote from the Telkom ISDN 128k offering:

<i>'This multi-link application greatly enhances the user's Internet experience, and initiates two calls to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). The user is therefore charged for each call to the ISP.'</i>

I don't think that this 'new' offering will hit home at all, it has been available for a number of years, and those who have done the research between ISDN and ADSL will know that 128k has been possible and it's not new. I'd be very interested to see the takeup on this new product, as it has always been available.

My thoughts exactly.

Telkom's quick to say on their adverts, "over the last 20 years, we have introduced so many hundred new services in South Africa..." RUBBISH. Telkom has not developed or launched one single new service, they simply took overseas established services, and decided now is a good time to rip SA off all over again.

It's a pitty that the general SA Public is not educated in basic tellecomunications. Telkom would have gone bankrupt years ago...

OMW!! I put in a quote and forgot to comment on it in my last post here... LOL

Well, here goes again, and this time I won't get sidetracked...

<i>'This multi-link application greatly enhances the user's Internet experience, and initiates two calls to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). The user is therefore charged for each call to the ISP.'</i>

Good marketing is what sells, and I'm happy that they entered this sentence. How many people will <b>not </b>be phased by being charged for each call to the IPS. I know for certain that it would certainly make me think twice about my phone bill. My phone bill was about R1,600 pm, and with 2 connections, I shudder to think of what it could be.

Not at all ASnogarD, you interpret it correctly.

I've been saying it all along! Telkom package their products in such a fassion as to not let them compete against eachother.

True!
