Telkom continues to bleed fixed line subscribers, lowest level in 18 years

More than half of the lost customers are Pre-paid ... why not migrate those remaining to their Mobile services and cut their losses? Pre-paid (fixed line) must have the lowest ARPU of any product!!

Well even if I wanted fixed line for ADSL, Telkom tells me that I have a debt out standing of a few 100 or 1000 rands but its due from about 2001. I dont have any bills from 2006 or older so what can I do. Well the answer is taht I've been living without Helkom for about 12 years now, and I dont feel it at all. For fixed line, Ive got Neotel and I've never had problems with them. So cheer Telkom, and may you never recover.

Yup, I left Telkom at the end of 2000, since then its been downhill all the way.... :D

Telkom obviously has absolutely no interest in increasing landline numbers, and in fact it would seem they are very happy with the way things are going with landlines. If Telkom really had any serious interest whatsoever in increasing landline numbers they would lower or abolish the voice line rental and ADSL line rental charges. The fact that they are not prepared to do this indicates they are happy with the status quo and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Telkom's long term goal is to get rid of all of their landline customers.

If you think that for the price of the monthly voice line rental alone (about R140) an average person could get a decent low-end smartphone contract including voice, sms and data, why would anyone want to pay for a landline?

Telkom = Total idiots.

If that is the case could they at least grant access to their last mile copper network to other operators(LLU)?... But hey, Telkom being Telkom I don't think so, at least for the foreseeable future.:crying:

Missing the point. We have a bunch of Telkom lines and we're going to move to fibre (one line) to replace it as they keep going down. So we may still be increasing fixed line penetration, but not fixed line numbers.

Because then governments promise before the 99 general elections of getting landlines rolled out to all people would be admitted to have been a big giant fib.

Prepaid DSL lines would generate some revenue - if the charge is correct; so on current statements about line access maintenance and return statements R5000 pa. If you take the impairment into account it can surely be brought to a wholesale figure of R4500 p.a which is R375 per month and somewhat cheaper than a 4Mbs line service currently in play. Now the ISPs take the risk and will probably require a 12/24 month contract (because if Telkom charges on a wholesale annual basis - in fact you can structure the product to include installation etc ... for R8500 for 2 years, R500 of which is the installation and admin) but they can provide their products at the current price to customers who do not want - or cannot get due to outstanding debt - Telkom accounts.

....Of more concern or interest for Mybb forumites is the inadequate utilization of the network by Telkom for data services(ADSL), of 2 427M possible post-paid lines only 870K are ADSL subscribed(is that a 36% utilization?).

Therefore I would like to ask,how true is it then according to the Internet Solutions document submission in 2011 on LLU that Telkom had 8 Million physical lines deployed? Surely some form of price reductions or allowing competition into the last mile could address this under-utilization.....

Hang on, isn't that what everyone on these forums have been saying since God knows when?:D *SIGH* Was going through the financials and it's depressing....for me,how opportunities are squandered, dare I say recklessly, to the detriment of the citizens of this country.:mad:

well soon as i can drop my voice part of the landline i will and save R140/m

ADSL is the only reason I think.

ADSL is the only reason I think.

Exactly, I think eventually ADSL subscribers are going to be the only landline users left. I know from my own experience I have a landline just for ADSL, I don't even have a telephone connected to my landline. Telkom has never made a single cent from me for voice calls apart from the compulsory voice line rental.

If people are moving from Telkom - what are they getting?

I have a Telkom ADSL line - mostly because I don't like having a "cap" my line is uncapped "In Afrihost's terms anyway" and thus I don't ever need to worry about how much data i chew through.

Last month I pulled around 100Gb of streamed content over my 1MB line and paid the same price.
There is simply no other players involved that offer true uncapped services. Or are there?

but our government doesn't lie to us ....
</sarcasm>

Btw what is the breakdown of business to home fixed line subscriptions doing over time
