So was there actual a tender put in for this bid, or was it just awarded by default to the incumbent?

Isn't this just Telkom investing in their network and uttering the magic 2010 incantation for some free publicity?

Its great that this cash is getting spend on NGN stuff which is all to the good...

It is a VIK (value in kind) deal. Telkom is effectively giving FIFA R255 Million worth of free network services in return for being a "National Supporter". There is no tender process for sponsorship. Plus, in the case of SA who else can offer the services?

The good news is that Telkom will be forced to invest in infrastructure.

I am interested to know what MTN thinks of this. Each FIFA partner/sponsor/National Supporter is supposed to have exclusivity in their business field...like telecomms
