Has anyone ever gotten a deposit back from Telkom? With each service you get from them they charge you for two months upfront - but I've never heard of anyone getting that deposit back.

Anyone got the lowdown on this?

I've actually received a cheque from them once after I've canceled my fixed line.

I don't think that's a deposit (although they do sometimes do that too). The two months is because you normally pay in advance - so for your first month, you're paying for month 1 and month 2. Your payment in month 2 is then for month 3, and so on.

Yes like Cathryn said. In the first month of a new service (ADSL, Closer, ect) the charge would be double. ;)

Deposits?

Nope, that went out eons ago, you used to pay a deposit for the phone ... they stopped round about when they introduced teklom shops, and at that point they basically gave the phones to those that had them for the deposit money.

Nowdays a "deposit" is an installation fee.

I had a normal land line and changed it over to prepaid just when it was introduced by Telkom - changed back to normal line two months later when the would not allow 7-7 calls on prepaid, they tried to make me pay a deposit for changing back to normal land line - I refused and they conceded.

Then I moved from isdn to adsl and Telkom gave me a asdl router pots that turned into a brick after two weeks - I tried to exchange it and they could not find any evidence that they supplied me with this modem so I bought a Nergear Wireless Access point router and fire wall all in one (still working).

Then I moved to the Western Cape, cancelled my account - Telkom only got this right after six months and they tried to charge me for rental, services delivered for this six months and believe it or not, they all of a sudden found proof that they supplied me with a asdl router pots that I never paid for and wanted their money - I refused and asked they nicely to meet me in court they conceded by writing of the money.

As a consumer, know your rights and not even Telkom will skrew with you!

When I got my first account years ago I had to put down a R700 deposit. However this was due to me not having a credit history. So as I understand it ( could have changed over the years ) if you have a credit history , no deposit otherwise deposit. When I moved and cancelled the line I got the money back .... eventually. nuff' said.
