Eish.
If this has been discussed, I cannot find it.
Existing DSL + Landline, obviously with Telkom.
New fibre installed through Openserve, with non Telkom ISP for data.
So I created a VOIP number (Freshphone)
Applied to port old Landline no to new VOIP account - and I thought it would be a straight forward process.
Was waiting for porting to finalize before cancelling landline and DSL.
So I received an interesting phone call from a very knowledgeable Telkom lady, re the porting.
I did not understand all the technical jargon, but the bottom is this -
If Telkom were to go ahead an port the number, I loose the landline, the DSL service AND the Fibre install.
Somehow the Fibre and Landline/DSL is linked.
I can apply to cancel the landline/DSL - which leads to Openserve having to split the Fibre and landline/DSL somewhere-else.....?,
and somehow keep the Fibre, BUT then the current Telkom number is GONE.
Apparently this is an issue with the current Telkom/Openserve system, and it is something they wish to change, BUT there is no alternative but give up the number for now.
Which then really invalidates the need to have the VOIP in the first place.......and this after having spend money on an ATA adapter and rewiring the current phone lines to accommodate the ATA to work on the fibre network.
Everyday something new.
Am I missing something?
