So today was the day: Telkom (a Huawei technician on behalf of Telkom actually) arrived at my apartment in Pretoria East to install my fibre line.

Just look at all the goodies I got for free (gratis - mahala - no installation cost and sommer on a month-to-month package as well):

One of these:

And a small one of these:

And, for the important part, my first speed test (I only went for their 20Mbps package, 100GB softcap):

I'd like to say it has all gone smoothly, but in reality there were a few hiccups. Firstly my estate has had some pre-wiring for fibre done, so it took a while to discover that I needed to order my installation through Telkom's special Gated Community Services: 080 0111 250. The regular call centre didn't even pick up fibre in my area, so they couldn't accept an installation request (turns out they have different databases -> go figure). From when they accepted my installation it took three weeks for them to contact me for an installation date, and then once they phoned me the installation happened the very next day. Required some additional wiring in my apartment, but the technician had everything he needed with him.

Tomorrow I get my telephone service activated over the fibre line (was only an extra R17/month -> bargain!).

So there you have it, say what you want but Telkom had fibre where I am and nobody else did, so my hands were tied. We got there in the end :) And yes, I know I'm a cheapskate only getting the 20Mbps package (Telkom does up to 100Mbps), but ye olde budget dictated it.

Hope the above helps somebody :)

Nice so because it's openwerve fibre if you ever run short of or need extra data you can basically buy any adsl account and just add that username and password on that VDSL/ADSL router telkom gave you just like you used to on adsl.

Now that's useful to know. However, I just read the story about Telkom's new unlimited FTTH and ADSL data packages that they're launching from the end of this month ... 1.8TB FUP for data for under R1 000 (on the 20Mbps speed), and unlimited landline calls and no landline rental to boot. Pretty tasty, might need to upgrade to that.

To be honest that is a decent deal. HomeUnlimited from Telkom is pretty competitive on their own fibre but might not be the best deal compared to like Vumatel or so.
