Telkom Fibre, VPN throttling?

I recently had Telkom 10Mb fibre installed, uncapped. I also run a VPN, and noticed that my line speed goes down to 30k when connected to VPN.

Peculiar, so I started fiddling. When I connect to the VPN, my line speed is 30k. When I disconnect, wait a minute, open a new browser session and run a speedtest, I get 30k still. Leaving it for 5 minutes, new browser session, speedtest gives 10Mb.

Is Telkom ISP throttling VPN now?????

Does not explain the slow speed (for a while) when disconnected from the VPN. Also, it's a commercial VPN with a paid subscription. Not that sucky. I have had good speed (only about 10-20% drop in speed) when connected.

It's not making sense, will need to investigate more.

Express VPN works the best in terms of speed. I usually stream 1080p with no problems. NordVPN also quite fast :)

If you want a reliable VPN you gotta pay :) ExpressVPN even has mediastreamer DNS. You're able to stream Netflix via Consoles / Routers etc with changing the DNS setting's

Your speed should be slightly lower if your connecting to a local server but not by that amount. I use a VPN myself and I've noticed that most ISP's throttle them on Uncapped accounts. I've only ever used Afrihost and Axxess Premium accounts with my VPN and I can tell by experience that both throttle VPN traffic. Afrihost is the only one that has tried to fix it but their Critical care department simply stopped responding one day... South Africa is still a bit "back water" when it comes to VPN's.

Afrhost will block it between 18:00 and 23:00 give or take an hour.
Axxess will throtte the line to 50% 24/7 as far as I can tell...

Are you connecting to the VPN from your modem or one client device?

If from one client, what happens if you speedtest from a different device (that thus doesn't use the VPN).

(For the time I was involved with Telkom Internet, all VPN traffic was treated like all other general traffic, neither prioritised or deprioritised, and work over my own VPN connections was fine (including copying large files).

However, you really need to test correclty (and describe in sufficient detail your setup and testing) before blaming your ISP.
