Telkom free ADSL speed upgrades announced

Back when I was there, we had a whole 2Mbps total, upgraded at some point to 10Mbps.

At work, I haven't been able to get over 95Mbps recently, I think when we moved offices a 100Mbps switch must have been used somewhere :-(.

I don't quite follow, perhaps I did not properly state my opinion, which is that government is heavily represented on Telkom's board of directors and thus has the power to steer Telkom in any direction that government wants Telkom to go.

No, I got your opinion. But, Government's goal also can't be for Telkom's share price to fall through the floor, and have the Government pension schemes fail.

If government's goal was ever to improve the lives of South Africans

Then they wouldn't waste money on expensive cars, unnecessary trips overseas for an entire entourage of people, followed by a chase plane, or blow public funds on parties celebrating their parties existence, but rather spend it on education and service delivery (e.g. providing electricity).

However, my point is that they shouldn't be abusing investor's (if there are any independent shareholders left) money to achieve government's goals, government has its own sources of revenue for that. If, for example, Government decides that the existing DSLAMs should be retained to service under-served communities, and are prepared to fund or takeover the work of maintaining them, that might make sense. If they can ensure that a program to roll out copper in the same community will not be an exercise in futility.

However, community upliftment goals shouldn't conflict with the creation of an efficient business environment.

(I tried to bring this back on topic, but I will refrain posting further on this topic in this thread)

I stay in Yellowwood Park area in durban and since this morning my 4mb line is synching at 8mb with upstream of 1mb

How ironic is this "initiative" on the back of today's news.

"MyBroadband has received information that the tentative plan is to upgrade all current DSL384 users to 1Mbps in early June 2012. Three weeks later all current 1Mbps ADSL users will be upgraded to 2Mbps."

somewhere i read 1 june somewhere

Seems Telkom has already dropped the ball in the speed upgrades. I have a 1 mbps line, and I've not seen any improvement in my speed, up or down.

Telkom did make an official announcement after MyBB published that article. Upgrades will be phased in Aug/Sept 2012.

When I first read the article I totally thought that they said they would start in July :/ Another month to wait I suppose.

False Alarm!

Saw my 384k line downloading at speeds up to 41Kbps for the first time and got excited that my line was finally upgraded. But alas, I'm still on the same speed, just better performance from my line. Ah well, guess I still have to wait a little longer for the upgrade!
