I heard from a friend over the weekend that a message went out to all SAIX SP's that telkom is going to implement a 10gb local cap on top of the 3gb international cap.

Can anyone confirm this?

If Telkom wanted to keep up the competition with Sentech I doubt they will introduce the 10gb cap. [:D]

[:D] Soz the words : telkom + competition != reality ... so yea... the rumours from high up places were enough to make me cancel my adsl order. Telkom dont care about competition from sentech, they only want to stop the proxy sharing and local DC hubs.

Introducing an overall cap of 10Gig will be the last motivation I need to go to Sentech once they launch in Cape Town - but - I suppose Telkom does not care - until it will be too late for them (and the thousands they will still retrench to keep up profits)

Im also not sure about Sentech being a threat to Telkom. Telkom are very strong and I still say that behind closed doors in boardrooms and other places Telkom and Sentech have colaborated on their product rollouts and pricing. I beleive that Telkom is allowing Sentech to take a certain portion of the market for the "price holiday" arrangement.

Perhaps Im wrong, but these cartel type product models are happening all over the world as we speak. Its not a new principle. I wash your hand and you wash mine.

Telkom's fundamental reason for the 3gB cap had something to do with the cost of international bandwidth. Wonder what their reason will be for the local cap? I hope they are just upgrading the 3 gig cap to 10 gigs. Otherwise, telkom will be kissing my monthly ADSL subscription good bye...

Maybe you do... [:0]
Telkom reckons that the ADSL service is being abused. Things like ZAhub, VPNs and proxies (run over uncapped diginet lines) are considered a violation of the AUP [8].
ADSL users (and others) openly advertise and post services used to bypass the international restriction (cap). I think people should wisen up and not post stories how they managed to download 30GB in a month using zahub, but I guess it is too late for that... [)]
Telkom does read this forum.

In retrospect, the majority of users like me that couldn’t be bothered with P2P. Also by Telkom's admission, most users are happy with their service and only download between 1.8 and 2.2 gigs per month. So then why is Telkom so worried? Perhaps they have realised their error or if it ever was an error. More likely just one the hundreds of excuses we get told by them to justify their capping.

If they impose any more restrictions and penalties on DSL they might as well stop offering the service altogether as no-one will see a reason to buy it.

3GB int'l, 10GB local... so you won't even be able to POP your mail... nice going, shooting themselves in the foot.

I sincerely hope the rumours about local bandwidth are untrue. But as always there are ways around things.

Thats their reason for the rediculously low cap, the rediculously high line rental, the ISP charge on top of it, and for the sky being blue.

I honestly would not notice if they did a 10G local cap. The highest I've ever managed to do was about 6G.

I don't download porn, warez or movies and after the first few months of having DSL I've downloaded pretty much everything I want and the novelty has worn off.

I suspect that BTTB is right about Telkom's claim that most users are happy with the service and don't get capped.

I was being sarcastic. We have only Telkom's word that most (87%) are happy with the service. My point I was trying to make was that if Telkom were so worried about people downloading too much and are now about to impliment a 10 gig cap, then why do they tell us most people are happy and only download between 1.8 and 2.2 gigs. If most people only used 1.8 to 2.2 gigs then increasing the cap wouldn't be necessary now would it. So Maybe they were talking nonsense to start off with.

There are only about 140 local DC users at peak times (few days at the end of the month) which uses an absoulte max of about 120mbit/s of bandwidth. This is only one of several local p2p communities but still i can't see how such low volumes of local traffic could really effect telkom adversely.

True. So then, why the big smoke screens then?

Perhaps they just need an excuse to increase the cap because of pressure, but don't actually want to come out and say it directly.

Some telkom bigwig's sons have been complaining to dad for a few months now and dad decided to apply his mind and check it out.
Well the bigwig got hooked onto on-line space invaders playing against some american computer and kept on losing. This of course psised him off and he was just about to get it right by stealing all the family's bandwidth by the sixth that they got capped !

You imagine the siht he was in because the boys complained to mum and who better to get something done about the problem.

Next morning the bigwig called in the telkom adsl designers and asked them how they could have applied such a ridiculously low cap.
He had been playing for only two days, after hours, and was just about to kick the american computers butt, when the game slowed down and halted.

"I want to play all month" he instructed our beloved stevie.

"But Sir, if we give you an unlimited account and rudolph finds out, we could be in trouble"

"Do it", stevie was instructed.

"For everyone ? "

"yes, just do it, give 24/7 on-line gaming to everyone"

"but Sir, that's going to cost us $100 trillion for new cables,
you know what it costs to link to the americans"

"Damn, OK give them all 10GB, but only after hours, so they don't interfere with my daytime pleasures"

"OK, sir, that could work"

Now you know the real story behind the new 10Gb CAP.
