Anyone been following up on the supposed server downtime for Telkom email customers ?

I've noticed on M&G Blogspot, three stories by a blogger called "The Watchblog"

The latest being :-

TELKOM INTERNET STILL DOWN - MANAGERS 'GO HOME'

10H50 GMT+2

DESPITE thousands of complaints and tens of millions of rand lost due to Telkom's Internet systems crash - now in its fourth day - no efforts have yet been successful in correcting the fault.

In what is believed to be one of the biggest ISP crashes ever, Telkom's vaunted role as the "nation's Internet Service Provider" has been dealt a crushing blow and numerous clients using its telkomsa.net service have begun legal actions against the monopoly communications giant.

The Independent Communications Authority (Icasa) is to consider the deluge of complaints reportedly being sent to it. Legal actions, if successful, could run into millions of rands. A Durban-based import/export agency claims the Telkom "fiasco has already cost me more than R19 000 in cellphone calls to clients worldwide to alert them to the communication breakdown".

Meanwhile, all attempts to reach senior Telkom spokespeople have run up against a bureaucratic brickwall. "The managers have all gone home," a person who gave his name only as Ismael at Telkom Internet Customer Service Centre - 0800 500 200 - told The Watchblog.

"You can phone back on Monday and talk to my manager Isaac Mamabola. There are no-one (sic) here, okay," said Ismael.

Customers wishing to insititute claims for loss and damages against Telkom have been advised to contact 0860 305 305.

Keep watching this blog for Breaking News!!

I find it odd that I've seen absolutely no mention of any problems here on these forums.

Can anyone shed anymore light on this ?

Only issue that i know of is the SMTP Issue ( mail delay and connectivity ) to smtp.saix.net .. and that has been persisting for the last couple of days.
But that wouldn't only affect Telkom customers, it would affect everyone relaying mail through smtp.saix.net .

Just tested it and it seems to work fine for me ?

I use my own domain for SMTP and POP3, so I wouldn't know whether the smtp.saix.net server is causing k@k or not.

I just figured that if there was a problem as severe as the one indicated in that Blog post, surely this forum would've picked up on it and in fact ITWeb as well ?

Both are intermittent but testing yesterday indicated new mail was going through fine, who knows what's happening with the queued mail though.....

It might be a single server that went bad.

Without all the facts, it would be difficult to know what it reality. Which systems are down? Are they custom systems for the client? Who developed it? Who maintains it?

The SMTP server going up and down is a nuisance one would not expect to last more than an hour or so if professionally managed.

A year or so ago Telkom had "finger trouble" and cut my ADSL at 15:30. I then also learnt that the Telkom helpdesk operators are working without supervision etc etc.

After 16:00 Telkom runs without any management... only the bottom clowns are still working at those hours.

They've got a cluster behind that virtual of smtp.saix.net. The intermittent connectivity losses could be due to one misbehaving smtp but 4 days to rectify? Sounds dodge to me....

I've checked the SAIX noticeboard and the problem is still "open" with the last update made yesterday....
