I recently signed up for Telkom's 7.5GB LTE deal , previously with Mweb -ADSL - 3GB & only once in 3 years used more than the 3GB in a month. This is the first month of the LTE deal & so far have used 9GB of data !
Obviously I expect to use more because of improved speed & reliability , but not downloading movies etc so can't understand the increased usage ! Has anyone else experienced this ??

On what device are you using the service? If on a pc, download a usage tracker. If on an android device, check under mobile usage.

OK Thanks - using PC's will look for a usage tracker to download.

I have found that if you have a faster connection, applications like Skype use a LOT more data.

Excessive Data usage with Telkom LTE

I recently signed up for Telkom's 7.5GB LTE deal , previously with Mweb -ADSL - 3GB & only once in 3 years used more than the 3GB in a month. This is the first month of the LTE deal & so far have used 9GB of data !

I have a similar experience. I find it highly unacceptable that such high data usage occurs with Telkom LTE! This is not the first time I hear this! Similar feedback from other new LTE customers reported to me as well after making my issue known...

My Story:
I wanted to upgrade from a "Slow 2Mb ADSL" connection and was advised by a Telkom Mobile agent (Telkom Direct store) to go the new faster LTE route. As I previously had a 10+10Gb ADSL line and hardly ever exceeded my monthly cap, I opted for the 20Gb/month LTE contract. Within the 1st 10-days of my activation the 20Gb cap was reached!!! #$%^@*! Obviously I had to "Top-up" at the "More-expensive" Mobile data rates to ensure connectivity. In month two the same happened to which I realized that there is a problem, This was NEVER the case with my ADSL line and I have never used 20Gb/month before!!?

I requested a breakdown of my usage to try and determine what caused this massive increase in usage, but was told detailed usage indication is impossible. I asked if I could revert back to fixed ADSL instead of LTE and told: "No, the Telkom Mobile and Telkom-ADSL services are separate and that I'll need to cancel my LTE contract with full penalties due on the two year contract! %$#@*&!? It was then suggested that I upgrade my 20Gb/month capping to a 50Gb/month LTE contract at R699/month. Firstly I could not do this in month two and had to wait out a 3-month contract probation period before I could upgrade!!!! %$#@*&!? After having to Top-up in month three again, I finally upgraded to the 50Gb/month LTE from day-1 of month four. NEEDLESS TO SAY - I AGAIN REACHED THE 50Gb/Month cap on day 25 of the month and again almost every month after that between days 20 to 28!!! THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE - I CANNOT BE USING 50GB in 20-days EVERY MONTH!!@#$#%^&*#@$!?

I do NOT do any Streaming, Yes, we play some Sony-PS3 games and use internet, but surely not 50Gb every month!? Yes we have Apple I-tunes with six devices connected, but surely not 50Gb every month!? Yes we have two PC's connected, one laptop and one Desktop with Windows and Anti-Virus updates (now scheduled for a/h 00h00-07h00 updates) but surely still not 50Gb every month!? This is ridiculous!!!

I even went as far as increasing Wifi connectivity security with specific device IP/Mac address access only allowed, to ensure no hacking. But still the excessive usage continues month-after-month!! NOU IS EK GATVOL!

To make matters even worse now, from time to time a low/slow connection occurs and the intended High-speed for LTE is not achieved. Thus a "Reliable connection" is also not achieved anymore. Connectivity is even lost and resetting the LTE router is becoming "old-news" now. Simply not a viable/acceptable solution as suggested by Telkom support agents anymore!!!? $%^&&*!@#$*!?

When phoning Telkom Mobile support 10210 from home, I get the following responses:
1. Oh you will naturally be using "more data with LTE" because of the faster upload-/download speeds being achieved with LTE (Updates, etc.). This is "Normal".
2. Sorry - our systems are down, please try phoning back later for support...
3. Service agents not available after hours, please phone during business hours.
4. As my area is on the "Edge" of the LTE-coverage area, I may lose connectivity from time to time. [This is ridiculous and unacceptable]

The irony is that I am inadvertently binded to a two-year agreement, with cancellation penalties. Telkom does not want to "Budge" in allowing me back to "fixed-line-ADSL" with Telkom, without penalties, and still cannot prove to me what is using up my 50Gb/month LTE data every month, nor what is causing a reduction in quality of service or connection.

I would love to know if anyone else is experiencing the same "High data usage" with Telkom Mobile LTE?? I am starting to think this is a "billing issue" and not a "usage issue".

Please suggest ways for me to monitor data traffic usage? Surely Telkom should supply this service as proof of what is being used by each LTE client!?

I used 3G for many years and switched to LTE approximately 1 year ago. My usage is also considerably higher, but I attribute it to normal bloat. For example, so many websites now have video ads. I resisted using ad blockers, but I'm reconsidering. I would love a simple Chrome extension that prevents it from loading all video, until clicked.

Thanks Nic
If I may ask - what is your average usage per month?

If browsing the internet is intended, our household of four must be spending a lot of time on the internet...

I recently found out that a setting on Facebook allows to "Auto-download" all video content automatically when connected to Wi-Fi. This is something which we "manually" switched off on all our mobile devices, but more than two months ago already...

Believe me, I have attempted various options and introduced various setting and usage behavioral changes, in order to reduce usage and general bloat.

The fact remains that the Telkom LTE router records on average 60Gb+ usage per month (or 2Gb average per day) - still excessively high in my books according to expected use.

To really understand what is being downloaded or utilizing the bandwidth, be it PC internet-video, PS3-Gaming, I-tunes mobile, or simply a few definitions of which devices or which type of content forms part of the high volume traffic, would be insightful...

Telkom should supply Bandwidth Monitoring tools by default.

What routers are you guys using? Perhaps its possible to see which devices are using the most data.

Telkom Huawei LTE CPE B593 Router: http://www.telkom.co.za/today/media/downloads/PDFGuide_Huawei_LTE_Router.pdf

Exactly my problem: It is not possible for me (or Telkom) to see which devices are using the most data. That is something I would expect Telkom would be able to supply the client (be it a guide, or inclusive software)... Anything just to manage the additional load and utilization - something that is known and expected by Telkom and should be placed in the hands of the client in order to manage usage properly and not get unexpected super huge increase in utilization (never experienced before...)

We used approximately 3GB/month on 3G. Now we're up to 5GB/month among 2 people.

Devices: 1 Ubuntu PC, 1 XP, 1 Android Tablet and a couple of Android phones.

Router: B593.

Measuring bandwidth quickly becomes very complicated. IP addresses and encryption makes it difficult. So it's not surprising that ISPs don't help you with this.

But the B593 does help you: You can have 4 SSID, each with it's own password. Then every user can connect to a different SSID and you can monitor the usage of each.

3-5Gb vs 60Gb per month is a huge difference... I still would love to know what is causing a monthly usage of 60Gb data... We are a family of four, but really doe not do much downloads, nor any streaming. Still a mystery to me - but will start monitoring now with the suggested software... In my mind: LTE to blame. Beware of jumping into LTE agreements!

LTE is not to blame at all....

Something else has changed in your usage habits or network..

You went from crap slow 2mb to super fast LTE.... SOMEONE has changed their usage habits.

I totally agree, I don't believe the ISPs take any of the CAP. It can always be explained with a bit of digging. If you don't watch those updates they can easily kill a GB before you know it. I moved to uncapped LTE from 30GB LTE and even when I was on the 30GB package with correct monitoring and daily Netflix streaming we never capped. Move over to uncapped I monitor nothing and I can tell you that the speeds are insane it will DL 40GB in less than an hour so if you are not careful you can easily cap.

But as I mentioned proper monitoring and you will be fine.
