Hi guys

I posted a summary of the Telkom meeting under the news section. This summary was written by the secretary who took notes during the meeting. I did not alter it in any way, and it should therefore be a fairly accurate reflection of the meeting.

As you will notice I tried to keep the meeting civil and negotiate something for ADSL users, but I think this was simply not possible to achieve. You will also notice that a promise about better communication was made, but I did not receive any form of correspondence from Telkom since the meeting. We will therefore continue with action. It is heartwarming to see that many users are taking initiative in writing to the media, political parties and other organizations. I will continue my correspondence with these organizations, but I urge you to join the drive. The more people hear about us the better.

Regards,

RPM

Hi guys

I just received a reply from Steven White about our meeting. I would therefore like to scrap my earlier comments about not receiving the promised feedback. I have been asked not to publish this email on the forum and that it is confidential, but I will definitely keep you informed about progress. They did promise better communication with us, and I therefore urge you to post your compliments, complaints and concerns.

Regards,

RPM

Reading the summary of the meeting, I have to agree with some points raised. This forum has become a flame zone against telkom and some remarks where just completely useless, not adding any value. Anyone can say they are unhappy with the service, but at least state a proper reason behind or make sure you suggest a possible answer or work around. Other thing you could do is to have a general flame zone where people can go completely balistic if they want.

Keep you critism constructive even if it is a negative light. The sooner we accept that we have to work with telkom, yes put pressure on them to listen, the more headway we can make. So go flame in the flame zone and use the rest of the forum to find solutions, make suggestions and post informed information - Telkom obviously needs to come to ball park here...

What I would like to see is that if you make a suggestion about a new package or something, that an official from telkom can reply to this. Make the information given factual and the truth and not some rumour that someone heard from the help desk.

These are my views and mine alone. Forum was good in the start and then it just became a flame zone.

Hi RPM,

I briefly went throught the report of the meeting with Telkom.

extract

"I cannot give you a list of the user base but you are free to
solicit an opinion from the market place."

I suggest we approach various ISP and ask them to conduct a survey (supply them with a survey). The ISP will e-mail their clients the survey and the ISP will provide us with the results (no personal info with be given to us)

Im sure most ISP (except Telkom) will be willing to co-operate. What you guys think?

Hi RPM,

thanks for talking to them.

Very interesting:

They are not prepared to come into the open on contention ratios etc so users can see themselves if they are getting that way bang for their money. Big Brother Telkom will decide.

Will they be prepared to publish a listing in which the port priorities are indicated? It can't be that difficult. Again, clients can see what they get for their money.

They are planning to roll out a new service even more expensive than the current.

I would love to see the product and a Telkom reason for the rediculous high costs for ADSL compared with the rest of the world.

International rates were mentioned elsewhere, and what struck me was that the line rental alone Telkom charges is more expensive than ADSL offerings elsewhere in the world.

Lastly: If I'm not mistaken, the service improved during the last few weeks. International is less unpredictable in speed.

ADSL is not good for gaming? This was never marketed? Of course it was marketed as this in the beginning. It was all over their website. Surely the fact that it was posted on their website constitutes 'Advertising'.

Will post more comments later ... too revved up to make any 'contructive' / Telskum friendly comments. Amazing how we must keep it above board for them ........

Firstly rpm, Thank you for all that you are doing -
a great, great job, but Steve has thrown you a curveball.

It is my opinion that the Telkom response cannot be confidential.

A lot of contributors are seriously angry and this is reflected in their posts - we all deserve full disclosure of the response from Steve.

here's some more of me ranting ... oops telskum friendly constructive criticism - can't help myself.

"SW - urges R to duscuss the issues before publishing incorrect information."

Erm, while RPM started this forum he is not responsible for publishing of content. Content is "published" by forum members.

"SW - The stats state that the amount of complaints are limited and mostly pertain to the 3 GIG cap"

Well, I have fortunately managed to stay this side of the 3Gb cap each month, but only just - and that thru surfing and limited dl'ing ( not p2p, I don't even have the stuff installed but rather development libraries and the like ). I am a disgruntled user as the port prioritising was never mentioned before I signed up for ADSL! Please be so kind as publish these stats.

"SW - ADSL is working 120% in terms of what it is supposed to offer"

Really? Please could you let us know what that is as the "rules of use" keep on changing every other day.

"SW - If they only knew how much bandwidth is availabe to them"

Well, please do let us know. At the same time please inform us of contention ratios.

"SW - It is clear on the website .... did not do their homework properly"

Now hold me back on this one!!!!! FFS, if telkom did not keep on changing what is allowed / what isn't allowed, removing this, removing that, then YES users can do their homework and can make informed decisions. Example, when did port prioritization become publicised? When did the cap change from either/or to combined?

"SW - You cannot expect to be able to game with this service"

WHAT! - this was one of the big marketing campaigns ( on the website ) ... another thing changing??? It was clear on the website, as stated by Mr White where we users should have done our homework.

"SW - It is an ACCESS PRODUCT"

Well, that's what we're bitching about, ATM it is not an ACCESS PRODUCT. We want better ACCESS to the internet without port prioritization.

"SW - International bandwidth
- This is where the bottleneck occurs"

Erm, I thought there was so much bandwidth ... if we only knew, right. Your words Mr White. Nice side step on the transparency of port prioritization.

"SW - states that the 'good for gaming' slogan metioned by RPM was never legally mandated by Telkom"
So, what you're saying is that any information on the Telkom website is not legally binding? So htw do u expect us to do our homework and make informed decisions?

"SW - I (SW) want to know who you wrote to and spoke to?
- There is no excuse for poor customer relations."

LOL, ROFL. OMG what a ..... It was addressed to you Mr White as mentioned by RPM. So you agree, you do need to brush up a bit on your customer relations.

blah blah blah ... enough crap for one day. This guy keeps on contradicting himself and going round in circles chasing his own tail.

Hi Microfast and others

I misread the reply from Mr. White. He only asked for a certain address not to be published. I will post the Telkom reply in this forum a bit later.

I am sorry about the mistake.

I'll try my best to be constructive. Little bit dissapointed about reading the meeting because it looks like Telkom is trying to side-step the issues.

I think this forum is about only one thing and that is 'a good deal'. I must agree that this forum turned into a flame zone and I believe it's for one reason only. Many users feel that they are not getting 'a good deal' and that they just have to accept the cards that they have been dealt with. People normally don't flame and complain for no aparent reason.

So, what I think will solve your problem, Telkom is to give us, 'your customers' a good deal. That's all we ask.

Hi to all forum users and moderators:

A couple of things:

1. WE are the Telkom clients! Why are WE treating them with kid gloves? WE (the telecommunication product users of SA) are the reason they have jobs!

2. This monopoly will not last forever!

3. WE CANNOT allow the fact that Telkom have now recognised us as a user community to influence our true feelings and our posts. If we allow that to happen Mr White has managed to use his dialouge with us as a stick. Anyway who does he think he is to tell me what I may or may not say, freedom of speech is my (and every citizen's) CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT!

4. Well thought out product sugestions are an excellent idea. Telkom should take heed - these are their clients telling them what the market wants.

I totally agree.

-> We wil give credit where credit is due
-> We will vent our frustrations when we are frustrated as it is our constitutional right and this is a PUBLIC forum.
-> We will try to keep our criticism constructive, but this is a public forum and tempers are bound to flare when people get treated unfairly.
-> Telkom is a very powerful company and don't need to be treated different to any other company when we receive bad service etc...
