My 8ta speeds are horrifically slow. They have called me many times, been to my house twice, but I honestly don't see how they can fix this, short of putting an antenna on my house (which I cannot do as I rent and the owner will not allow any boosters/antenna's).

This is 8ta

So I decided to borrow a vodacom 3g stick (k3770) and bought a sim card, loaded some airtime...

From the same location as I performed my 8ta speedtests, this is
Vodacom:

All I want to know is why? How can there be such a difference?

Just to add... According to the 8ta website, I am in a good location for LTE, so I think I should get to be part of the trial :p

Hi Evil-Twin

It is with sad regret that the only solution would be an antenna which we are unable to install for you due to your situation.

The reason for the difference in speed is due to the other provider probably have a tower closer to you. We have upgraded the tower which you connect to enabling it to allow more traffic through. There is currently no congestion on this tower whereas it was experiencing little congestion before the upgrade. The only solution for you now would be for us to provide a tower closer to your premises. In order to provide a tower, we need approval from the surrounding community which is famous amongst Mobile Providers for putting up a fight when we request to provide new towers to the area.

The other option we have is to provide you with a cancellation with no cancellation fees. If you would like to cancel the service, please follow the following steps:

6. Contract cancellations (cancellation fees and Ts & Cs apply)

Documentation required:

Letter with summary of cancellation reason(s) required including account holder’s signature
Copy of Account holder’s ID/passport

Additional information required:

Name and surname
Alternate contact number
Email address
8ta number to be cancelled
8ta Account Number
Case number:

Send above information to:

Email: social@8ta.com with subject line: MyBB <username> cancellation request
An 8ta/Telkom store

@8ta: What is the process and cost involved with getting an antenna put up?

Hi carstensdj

If you would like to get an antenna installed on your own, you will need to get your own provider and they will provide you with the costs.

If we have identified you as a candidate for an antenna, we will have one installed and then come and remove it once something is done to improve your coverage.

Thanks for quick reply!

I would consider myself a good candidate for a few reasons... How do i go about applying to see if i qualify?

No problem carstensdj!

Its not about applying for one.

If you have a contract with us and you have poor service where the map indicates you should receive a good service, then once our technicians and engineers have assessed and analyzed your situation fully, they will recommend a fix for you to improve the service.

Hey 8ta,

Well what I can say thus far is that there are many people who are able to get great speeds using your network, and I am one of the very few people who happen to be in a notoriously bad signal area, however 8ta has gone above and beyond to try resolve this issue and indeed has provided a potential solution, offering an antenna, which sadly I cannot take advantage of as people in my area have some sort of problem with antenna's or anything else related... On a side issue, I cannot receive iburst signal where I am either, yet 100 meters away from my house, in each direction, there is signal. It seems I am just in a really unfortunate location.

Thanks for allowing me the option to cancel my service, but even though my speeds are not great, I still get a lot of value out of spending R200 p/m for 10 GB of data, so I have no intention of cancelling. I am a loyal 8ta subscriber and intend on maintaining all accounts I have with 8ta.

Wow, wish I got these speeds at home:

Pretoria, no antenna, -73dBm

Hi Glipsie

As per the reference you have logged with us, you will be contacted on Friday to confirm if your issue has been resolved. Has it improved at all?

Hi Evil-Twin

Your loyalty is much appreciated. The area you live in is rather complicated when it comes to providing new towers and we will constantly look for alternatives which would suit the community there.

Thanks, I'm logging my daily experience but heres the summary:
1. Ping has improved (56ms local vs ~110ms before). There are far fewer losses/spikes, though they do still occur.
2. Browsing is vastly improved. I haven't had a site fail to load in a very long time.
3. VoIP is better, but still bad. The connection will drop every so often (can be linked to packet loss)
4. Streaming video is bad (twitch.tv, youtube etc). 240p will lag every so often, 360p will play 5s then lag for 2s, 480p is a slideshow.
5. Overall speed is still poor:

Eagerly waiting for the 15th :)

Hi all ...

I am from Villieria (PTA) and when I originally started using 8ta (promo 5) I was getting great speed which as of the last 2 weeks has become much much worse ...

Even so, the last 2 weeks have averaged 1.3-1.6mb down and 1.9mb up ... there are times when it is higher and lower ... The problem even though these speeds aren't completely terrible (they are bad as hell in my opinion) the latency and stability is what is killing me ... VOIP is almost impossible and Video Conferencing is totally impossible

BUT

The speed today has been horrendous ...

Hi all.

Just to share some info. I am in Killarney, JHB and been getting very low speeds on speedtest.net as well. Just installed a omni direction antenna from Poynting and have a huge increase in performance and quality. This evening got just over 10mb on speedtest.net and during the day its been between 5 & 8mb. Upload is around just over 2mb.
