Telkom Mobile goes live, 8ta remains in the wings

Wonder if they'll introduce post-paid itemised billing for calls made on Telkom Mobile on my existing Telkom ADSL/Voice account? Now that would be true convergence.

Site?

Probably not understanding this brand change well...

Telkom has announced the launch of Telkom Mobile, which it says is part of its convergence strategy

Oh dear...

Hmmm... bad news if you ask me... the 8ta brand had built alot of value and credibility... slotting under a Telkom brand will erode it's value considerably!

Telkom refused to tell us anything about the products that will be available under Telkom Mobile from tomorrow.

Converged bill not launching tomorrow, only in future.

I'm also putting some money on: "Move top-end packages out of 8ta and into Telkom Mobile"

*EDIT: Reply/quote fail, my bad.

So essentially 8ta will be religated to a high volume, low cost brand... sad... should have been the other way around...

Give us cheap LTE with large caps and you can call yourselves whatever you want.

*Sub*-brand, if you please. Whatever that means.

... sad... should have been the other way around...

Or no rebranding at all. I still don't understand what they aim to achieve under the Telkom umbrella they couldn't have done under 8ta. But I'm just a tech journo, I don't understand "brand", I only understand that R199 for 10GB per month is good, aggressive pricing (in South Africa).

As emailed:

Dear Customer,

Telkom introduces Telkom Mobile as the company’s leading mobile brand.

Telkom is thrilled to announce the launch of Telkom Mobile in support of the Telkom Group’s convergence strategy. Telkom is the country’s most powerful information and communication technology solutions provider, with the network that connects all networks across the country. The introduction of Telkom Mobile will enable the Company to more effectively leverage Telkom’s network infrastructure for your benefit.

8ta is a well-loved brand and will live on under a different guise. It will be repositioned as a product of Telkom Mobile and, later in the year, relaunched as an even more dynamic and nimble version of itself. Recently, 8ta committed itself to a five-year partnership with the PSL that will extend the 8ta-loving family to the football-loving community. New products will be introduced under the 8ta banner that will delight in their simplicity and offer great value. But we will tell you more about those exciting developments later.

So what does this change mean for you? Well, first of all, it means that you will benefit from the leading-edge technology that the Telkom Group provides. Our 3G mobile network is growing apace and is well placed to support new technologies as they are launched. In particular, both high voice and high data users will love the experience that our spectrum will provide.

Secondly, you will see more of the Telkom Mobile brand in our communication with you. Your bills will reflect the Telkom Mobile brand. Over time, our stores will be changed to Telkom Mobile, as will our advertising.

Best of all, the way you engage with us will remain the same. You will still experience the great customer service you have become accustomed to. You can reach our customer contact centre by phoning 081 180, or by visiting the web at www.telkommobile.co.za to communicate in real time via live chat. Or, if you prefer, you can manage your account via one of the self-service platforms. Your contracts, as well as their terms and conditions, won’t change. And you can look forward to new products and services that will make your experience with us even greater.

We are very excited about the opportunity that Telkom Mobile presents, and we’re sure that you will love it as much as we do.

Kind regards,

Attila Vitai
Telkom Mobile CEO
