I was in a telkom mobile store getting a new contract and phone for my daughter. We went for the LG G4 stylus on smartwhateva 100.

The first thing I did was look at the demo phone they had, go to settings and see what memory it had. 8Gb is not enough for any modern android phone. It has 16gb and yes, the smartwhateva contract details were right next to it. No storage capacity mentioned on the paper ad next to the phone.

It seems I was silly to assume it would have 16gb as we've just discovered it only has 8!

Why have a 16gb demo model and advertise the contract next to it but give out another phone?

Urgh!!!! I call that false advertising!

If they didn't advertise 16GB how can it be false advertising? ;)

Caveat emptor.

Are you an iOS fanboi or are you just ignorant?
"Slapping" a cheap sd card into the phone does little for it's app storage capacity and the fact that more than three quarters of that 8gb goes to operating system and gapps.

You can store most apps that you download on an SD card...

Have you spoken to them about it and asked why the phone you got wasn't 16GB?

Rather get your daughter a premium phone than a budget phone. Its sole purpose is to install a few apps like 15 the most thereafter the onboard storage is finished.

Yes , correct with saying the demo phone is misleading; you've within 7 days to cancel and check out the new deal sheet free battery and other goodies. If you unhappy with your purchase can I suggest digging deep in your pocket and getting this instead http://store.orange.com/za/meizu-m2-note-16gb-dark-grey-288604/

Always ask the consultant to check how much storage the phone has. There are 2 variants 8gb and 16gb was also gonna sign up for this deal but when I noticed the 8 GB decided against it. Do your homework online always deals Telkom co za

Hold on, matey. No need for personal denigrations. Those are not the only possibilities.

I am a Windows Phone user and would also have assumed that any modern mobile operating system can handle SD cards without issue.

Or is that an unreasonable assumption when it comes to LG smartphones? Why?

More importantly, the 16gb version also has 2gb of RAM. Not sure if they are available in SA though.

Most branded phones won't allow moving of stuff without rooting and voiding warranty. Like I said - Gapps and OS take up a huge chunk of that storage. You can't move those to SD card.

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm going to pop in there today, only realised the issue last night when she got a storage full error when installing an app. Unfortunately it's been more that a week.

It's amazing how many it won't move. Facebook takes up over 300mb but it only moves aroun half of that to the SD card. Many just say "can't move the app". Regardless, the OS and Gapps take up the lions share of that storage. I shudder to think what an update will do...

Nevermind storage. The resolution on that phone is really poor, especially for a 5.5'.

If you within the grace period I recommend you cancel immediately don't delay dude. For an extra R100 per month get your daughter a phone that has ram under the hood and storage. I bought a cheap tablet for air fair tickets only what a disappointment

We were aware of that bit, but the price was right for what we understood it to be. It's not a high end phone - we're under no illusions, but she loves it and the stylus is a nice addition for her artistic side. What i'm taking issue with is that in my opinion, it was advertised with 16Gb in the shop. I'm not expecting much but I'll pop in and see what they say... otherwise I'll take the chance on voiding the warranty and rooting it so I can get rid of Gapps that aren't required or move stuff to SD manually... hangouts, etc.

I'd argue that as well. You checked the display model which was 16gb and they gave you an 8gb one. Same thing happened to my dad with mtn but he didn't realise till late.

I've just come from Telkom. They still had the unit on display next to the contract:

FullSizeRender.jpg

I took the pic above then went to the counter and spoke to an agent. The first question I asked is 'If I take that contract, do I get that phone?' (pointing to the LG on display next to the contract details). 'Yes'. I asked a second time 'That phone?'... answer was yes.

I told him I was disappointed as I already had the contract but was given another phone. He asked which, I told him the 8Gb model and explained that I had deliberately checked their display model out next to the advert to make sure it had 16Gb storage as I'd been through this before and am well aware that 8Gb is just not enough. I had even asked an agent then too if I recall.

He checked the system and couldn't confirm whether it was supposed to come with the 8Gb or 16Gb model based on what he had so said he would write his HQ and get their guidance. He suggested they may have included an 8Gb SD card to make it 16 total storage but I pointed out that that an 8Gb S card in an 8Gb phone does not make a 16Gb phone as many apps can't be moved.

Hopefully I'll hear back (positively) from him soon. Their reps at our branch are generally good but don't know the details like they should.

16Gb/8Gb is not a small issue. 8Gb is a significant disadvantage on any modern android phone, hence why I asked the questions and looked at their demo unit. See how much is free even on the store 16Gb model - and that's pretty much stock.

Another issue there is that that offer is last month's - they haven't even update it yet. I don't think the SmartPlan 100 R199 pm offer is available anymore.
