The T2xxx series processors don't perform badly at all. Compared with the newer Celeron M5xx, the performance is suprisingly comparable. Note, the T2330 IS A Core Duo not Core 2 Duo. Don't think the T23xx has Virtualization capability. Many of the newer Intel-based notebooks use the X3100 onboard graphics, which (from the reviews) isn't too bad at all. I think I might opt for the Celeron model, assuming the provided specs are true

Shocking, I know. The fact of the matter is that my Centrino Duo notebook (Intel Core Duo T2050 @ 1.6GHz) offered very little performance gain over a friend's Celeron M 540 @ 1.7GHz

@Silver:
Oh, and if i'm not mistaken, the VGA should give you much better picture quality than S-Video, which is essentially a composite connection.

@Everyone else:
Sorry for so many posts. I'd do it all at once, but on a mobile at the moment: limits my character count :(

Hectic, at the end of the day, I guess the best way to tell is to just try it out. Will definitely take a HD divx file and try it out on one of the comparable toshiba notebooks. At this price though, it's going to be hard to beat, the next best thing is about R10 000 plus!

Sorry for yet ANOTHER post, but you might want to check out the Dell Vostro range. They're VERY well priced, ESPECIALLY for the specs offered. They're much like the HP 530 range: decent specs for decent performance without frills like card readers. Unless you want that sort of thing...
And as I recall, you can configure a system for well below R10k

What kind of battery life you get out of that? Poor?

To be honest, I haven't used it on battery before, I use a pc for internet, that's it, I don't do anything else on it :p I did see however when I was load shedded that Vista reported on Maximum performance that it would last for 40 minutes, if I put it on Balanced or Power Saver and turn down the display brightness I'm sure it would last for about 60 minutes if not a little more ;)

Ya, I guess that is pretty typical for that kind of machine.
I don't get why they haven't developed standard laptop batteries that last like 10 hours. Is it really too much to ask??

Would be beneficial for me only if I actually had a laptop to use with mobile internet, but I don't, so I don't have the use for it either, but I agree, it's needed ;)

the 36 month account doesn't bother me too much, as most of us have a land line phone (which don't think of us as contract, but as standard), and for the older generation who aren't too concerned about price competitiveness, i.t.o adsl offerings, this deal is quite a steal. If the notebook is the same model as the specs points to, you're saving about R5000. Not bad.

As for the battery life, I think you'll get about 2,5 - 3 hours for the first few months if you're doing a bit of typing and internet browsing, if you need longer, there are always extra batteries you can get from batterygeeek.net

Ya, you right ito the landline thing.

Just beware of your expectations re battery life. You won't get better than 1.5 hours out of that thing.

As much as they have advanced in PC & laptop tech, they still have to come up with a long lasting battery :(
I suppose the more "stuff' you add into a laptop the more the battery life is going to drop.

I think even the little Asus EEE PC get's about about 3 hours out of it before it needs a charge.

I was really hoping for a lot more out of my EEE. The thing is so small, has no optical drive and a SSD with no moving parts and still I only get 2.5 hours out of it when using it.

It is the base 2G version. The better versions have a bigger battery capable of 'up to 4hours' apparently. But they will cost R4k+ which is not on :(

Eee PC 4G Surf - 4-cell, Li-Ion, 4400 mAh, 7.4 volts: 2 h 45 min battery life
Eee PC 4G (701) - 4-cell, Li-Ion, 5200 mAh, 7.4 volts: 3 h 30 min battery life

Wonder how much the Cloudbook, Nanobook & MSI Wind PC's are going to retail for then?
