I received an email from telkom this morning that read like an April fools joke.

All uncapped dsl and fibre packages 4Mbps and up now include unlimited free calls to telkom land lines and telkom mobile sims.

Did anyone else get this?

Indeed the truth - from what I gathered through chatting to them, all uncapped dsl and fibre packages are being migrated to the new "Unlimited Home" plan which incorporates the "anytime plus" calling plan, therefore free and unlimited landline calls (Telkom to Telkom) as well as calls to Telkom mobile. I've already migrated and can confirm this is all true and above board and to be very honest, has gone a long way to changing my perception of the company.

That kind of makes sense of what a telkom technician told me on the phone on Tuesday. He said they were changing how uncapped data worked to. Something about scrapping the current FUP model for something else. He said with the new system, me being in a 10Mbps uncapped product, I'll have 900GB a month to screw with. Didn't say what'll happen when that 900GB gets hit.

First-off from what I understand, as an existing uncapped customer on a 10Mbps service offering, you will likely be upgraded to Unlimited Home at 20Mbps if your exchange can support it (their upgrades are based on the fact that you're currently paying almost R1000pm for your 10Mbps service whereas the new Unlimited Home products are priced more efficiently so you'll be upgraded to the 20Mbps unlimited home package at the same price (R1000pm). In terms of FUP, at 10Mbps you'd get 900Gb - when you reach 50% of that (450Gb), your speed will get halved during the peak two hours of the day, at 75% of the FUP that throttling will occur for the four busiest hours and at 100% of the FUP you'll be permanently throttled until your rollover to the next month. At 20Mbps, your FUP is 1.8Tb. Data consumed between midnight and 7am doesn't count towards the FUP. You'll also be eligible for a free Lit box which allows you to stream showmax, netflix, youtube etc with that data being zero rated and thus not counting towards the FUP. It's all rather nice, I'm on the 4Mbps package currently and very happy.

I've been looking at what telkom is doing with that LIT BOX for FreeMe 2GB mobile customers. I'm pretty sure Vodacom and MTN are going to throw their toys because of this.

Telkom seems to be on a mission to dirsupt the mobile data market. The only question is how well will the service work and how long will it last?

Indicator is their uncapped mobile offering. It's still going relatively strong.

Hi Jonboy V. Thank you for the detailed FUP (fair use policy) on a 10Mbps line. What are the FUP and goodies on your 4Mbps UnlimitedHome package?

Hi Jonboy V. Thank you for the detailed FUP (fair use policy) on a 10Mbps line. What are the FUP and goodies on your 4Mbps UnlimitedHome package?

So I'm paying R599pm for the UnlimitedHome 4Mbps package, which includes:
  • 4Mb ADSL line rental
  • Uncapped, unshaped internet with 360Gb FUP (throttling for busiest two hours per day once 180Gb is reached, throttling for four busiest hours when 270Gb is reached etc) - data consumed between midnight and 7am doesn't count towards FUP
  • Landline rental
  • All calls, 24/7 to other Telkom landlines and Telkom mobile numbers
  • Sim with 1Gb mobile data pm for 3G failover / insert into a mobile device (mine is in an Ipad)
  • All usual VAS items (CLIP etc)
  • I was on month 9 of a 24 month ADSL line contract (we go through modems like crazy due to lightning despite our best efforts so cheaper to let them replace every time) which then includes a free modem

Note that you can opt for any of the options over Openserve / Telkom fibre if your area has the infrastructure (they use the overhead fibre lines on the telephone poles) rather than ADSL.

Look I'm not one to do these sorts of things on a whim and I did my homework beforehand and if you still make use of ADSL and a landline, you can't find much better value. The FUP is the best (this coming from a capped Afrihost product) and I'm achieving 3.85Mbps (over wifi) on my line using Telkom ISP.

Yeah, and mine is in my Tab that does not work at all - sim with 1GB of data that i can't use? Went to visit Telkom store and the agent said they are currently having issues with these sim cards and could not give a date when it would be rectified....... I await with abated breath ........ Sigh

Strange, I haven't had an issue with mine at all - also, I don't believe a word the agents in-store have to say, rather ask for clarification from @TelkomZA on Twitter, those guys are much better. I've never (even in my cell currently on FreeMe) used Telkom APN, rather reverted to pointing to MTN 3G+ network - you get HSDPA constantly and full coverage as opposed to Telkom LTE through which mileage varies greatly.

I don't see my 4Mbps ADSL line with Telkom being bumped up to 10Mbps and still only paying R599 per month ?

Short answer, that won't be the case. If you were on a 2Mbps line plus uncapped (think it's called "Do Uncapped" currently with Telkom), which costs in the region of R570 pm, you'll be migrated to UnlimitedHome 4mbps at R599. If you're presently on Do Uncapped 4Mbps you're likely paying close to R800 pm, in which case you'll be migrated to HomeUnlimited 8Mbps which costs the same price. Etc. Telkom weren't clear on this in the press release and it took a lot of communication with them to figure it out.

The requirement for a new SIM is ridiculous. I have a TM SIM as my primary. Now I need another to use this data? Just add it to my current account!

Probably won't happen, can't even get them to combine my Telkom Mobile and Residential accounts into one.
