"He met with Icasa chairman Paris Mashile and other Icasa staffers last week, and says the meeting “went well”; he pointed out international trends, and discussed SA’s standing with the regulator’s representatives, along with whether SA is achieving the economic growth it should and what role telecommunications pricing plays in that sphere."

This is great news!

Nice article!

Great to have another voice repeating everything so many of us have been saying. Good to see the media giving it attention as well.

Now all we need to do is hypnotise a politician, such as Mr Plank, and make them say these words in a press conference.

“In countries where the local loop has been unbundled, the incumbent operator eventually grasps that you can make money in the wholesale business, and through maintaining and expanding the infrastructure. I can’t think of an example globally where an operator has not found an incentive to carry on maintaining the loop,” says Sutherland.

Can someone send this to the new Telscum CEO

Telkom – which controls other service providers’ access to bandwidth as it owns the undersea fibre-optic cable that brings bandwidth to SA – says that it is not correct to compare SA with other countries, as the terrain and demographics of the country are not similar to those in other countries

geez, now they're blaming the terrain. do they have an excuse for everything? look at egypts terrain, its a freaking dessert for crying out loud. australia is in the middle of nowhere and it too is mostly dessert. sure we have a few mountains, but so do so many other countries. kenya has the largest mountain on the continent.

in any case, this is good news. telkom is running out of excuses, and they'll soon be just a big laughing stock. hope icasa takes into account what sutherland said

"If Eskom can provide electricity to everyhome in south africa, why cannot you provide every home with a telephone line?" Now thats a question id like to put to Telkom! If Eskom can bridge our so called "Terrain" why cant they.

yeah, especially considering the large size of power lines and substations compared to tiny telephone lines and local exchanges. but they'll more than likely have an excuse for that as well - "we cant compare telephony with power". but in effect its the same principle of service delivery - just a different service.

Sweet *****, let this whole ICASA/SNO thing come to a head and end with Telkom learning the error of their ways.

This may be off topic, but has anyone seen the new insert with the latest TELKOM invoice/bill? Analogue line (monthly rental) UP 6 & now R92,28 exlcu and Home/Business DSL 512 (monthly rental) DOWN 20% & now R477,00 effective 1 September. They state as according to ICASA investigation!!! I can scan and post if need be, but to be it looks like ICASA got a bit soft, or TELSKUM is trying to pull a fast one! they even go to state that this allows them an overall increase of 0,1% revenue! Man are we getting SCREWED over or what!!!

on behalf of the people like me who don't have cars or even know how to drive, find another analogy, rather than this 'car' thing :p

separately, re Eskom and powerline net delivery, note this site talking about broadband delivery to moving trains, via power lines: http://www.ip-everywhere.com/

Forget about the Mercedes - For the cost of adsl after 1 Nov 2005 and with a monthly usage of 50 - 60 Gig, I am sure I will be able to buy a small house and a car.

Now this is plainly ridiculous

30GB will be just less than my rent.. eina.. but the prices we'vs been hearing are unconfirmed so all anyone can do in the meanwhile is hope and pray that it was either a joke, or that Telkom was putting their elbow into the water to see what people's reactions will be.

My sentiments exactly MaD,

Let's hang on until it's confirmed. If they do go with this scheme it's flies in the face of ICASA, so either Telkom are really stupid, or got really big cahoonas.
