Although Telkom likes us to believe that they're increasingly competitive, the reality is that they're not - and never will be (protecting the monopoly 'revenue rights' granted to them by the government has created a culture of incompetance and laziness - something which is typical of any monopolistic entity).

The facts. The cheapest ADSL offering available using Telkom:
* Installation: R437.50 (once-off)
* Monthly: R551.00 (comprising Line rental: R107; ADSL384: R245; TelkomISP Shaped 2Gb: R199)

To put this into perspective. Cheapest ADSL offering available using BT:
* Installation: Free
* Monthly (8Mb connection; 2Gb data, free weekend & evening calls, 250 free wifi mins): R201

That has to be one of the biggest jokes ever...my first bill I got from Telkom first of all didnt arrive, and second of all they overcharged me, thirdly when I spoke to the operator we got into such a big argument that they hungthe phone up on me!!!!!!!!!!

And that's why the name of this country is "South Africa" and the other is "England".

this country is so lame, i dunno why we even live here

Hey boet. In the 90's we had a cool 9kbps. It was way slower than a fax!!

Its now 2006 and we are blazing along at 4mbps (as long as you can pay)

By 2020 we'll have 8mb!! Okay Okay so the rest of the world will be like 200gbps but hey at least we have sunshine, braai's, bokjol treffers, the list goes on and on of great SA stuff we have. Ever lived abroad. You'll hate it!:D :D :D

Let's actually give the true facts here, and I am not defending Telkom.

You can go self install so that is installation free. 384kbps + line rental + OpenWEb 30gb local & OpenBrowse 192 (245 + 99.92 + 169 = R 513.92 )

And you forgot to read the fine print of BT: Introductory price achieved via credit on your first bill. (On a 12 month term: £15 for Option 1, £24 for Option 2 and £12 for Option 3. On a 18 month term: £48.24 for Option 1, £48 for Option 2 and £24 for Option 3). Payment by Direct Debit required. New customers only. Excludes upgrades/regrades. Requires BT line/similar. BT Broadband is subject to availability and conditions apply.

Well, just to summ it up. Telkom makes it compulsory to hire a telephone line first, so add R99/month for that. OpenWeb's 30gb Local is only that: local. I like to browse internationally, thanks. The cheapest you can get in SA adsl is R345/pm for Telkom + R200/pm for 3gb cap = R550/pm.
Now you sit with R550/pm for 384kbps and 3gb cap compared to any first world country that is simply crap.
As far as self-install option goes, I did that. Saved me R404? No. After Telkom confirmed with me that my line was active, I went to collect my self-install package, did everything necessary, only to see that my line is not active. Two days and many hours on the phone later, it was installed and working. I bothered to time the last phonecall, it was 1 hour 21 minutes, and after that it took another day before my line was activated. The time I spent talking to them on the phone costed me far more than R404 in working hours.
And the conditions of availability certainly applies here too. There are many areas in this country where Telkom does not even have dialup lines, leave alone adsl. Then you forget the waiting period for the adsl line installation...

Sorry but I have to correct you again..

The openweb account is 30gb local AND includes then openbrowse 192 package allowing you to browse international at 192kbps. If you download local and browse international like I do there is really no problem. And the cheapest ADSL connection from Telkom is infact 245 look at there website again. Also my post did include the line rental at 99.92 not 107 as you qouted.

Go and have a look again at the post, you will notice that it is 30gb local AND including openbrowse 192. You can browse international via openbrowse.

Keyword being browse, no downloading. No such limitation on BT, which makes your comparison invalid.
