Has anyone seen anything to support this. What is it being compared with?

"Prices range from an affordable R376.16 to R790.96 a month, owing to a strong partnership between Telkom, Microsoft, Intel and Mecer (Mustek), with customers saving between R1400 and R3600 in PC, software and other costs. "

Perhaps MyADSL, Hellkom, Antitrust, and the CUASA should send out a joint statement advising people NOT to be sucked into this?

I wonder what their response would be if Nov1 becomes reality. They are under contract with Telkom ADSL package and not their ISP if I'm correct?

As things currently stand, their pricing is not bad. If its including the PC and 3 years worth of 3 gig ADSL (on the high end package) thats about R6586 for the PC. Now for the average home user I wouldn't say thats to bad. Of course most of us here can build our own PCs with better specs for about the same price. Though who of us keep our PC's for 3 years with out upgrading first.

What happens if you want to upgrade to the 512k ADSL?
If they bring their pricing down (when hell freezes over), do you get a discount?
If ICASA's report is put into practice, those who bought into that will have lost about R13 000, which would have been more than enough to by a PC and more.

jus say the prices go up in November, will the people who sign up the 36 month contract would still pay the prices as the date they sign up or would they also have to pay the new november prices?

But thats what I'm trying to say : Telkom is not increasing the price on their ADSL, SAIX is increasing the ISP charge. There are many people that moved to ADSL becuase of the 10/20gig offerings from the high cap providers. How many of these new subscribers are using these ISPs?

"The affordable monthly payments are structured in such a way that customers do not have to search for burdensome credit schemes to finance their Internet experience."

Where else in the world do you need "burdensome credit" to access the Internet?
They over carge by 500%+ for a basic service and the give a ~10% discount and pretend to be champions of the poor.

Unfortunatly they spend more (of our) money on marketing and legal fees than they do on infestructure, so they get away with it every time.

On the other hand, I am sick of the old "I only need a PC for email and internet, what should I get?" question every time I go to a pub. Maybe I should tell them to contact Telkom, then it's not my problem if it goes wrong.

Heard from a Telskum insider today that Mustek have not been able to meet the demand - and that the first installations are only due to start next week.

Must say - to sell 1000 PC's with internet access in a customer base of over 4m can hardly be seen as an achievement

These could be buybacks.. wasn't that happening when the Fiat Uno first came out in the early 90's? They bought back thousands of cars to make the ratings go up and the car seem very popular?

i think it's a great idea that telkom has created. i think sometimes there is too much telkom bashing on this forum. sure their prices in general are over inflated, but a good idea, whether it be the devil or a g0d is still a great idea. and this unfortunately IS a great idea... and i think th figures prove it...

what i would like to know is who do thse people phone for hardware support and what happens if their computers wig out?

Methinks we will see (or hear) from very P-O'd customers on this very forum, those who got suckered into this deal.

Anyway, let the stew simmer...

Mecer stated they could deliver 20 000 per month.

Anyway most of the first batch of 1000 are orders for stock
at the various Telkom centres so less than half the delivered
boxes have actually been sold to consumers.

Sales have been way down on what was anticipated so we will
see a flurry of ads by Telkom shortly.

Hopefully common sense prevails tho and people avoid being drawn into a lengthy contract for what is amongst the most expensive internet services on the planet.
