Read this in the Sunday Times and figured its got to be some sort of typo???
CHEAPER telephone calls could be available to South Africans by Christmas if everything goes according to the plans of the second national operator (SNO). But the shareholders’ agreement, which was expected to be signed last week, has still not been finalised and has apparently yet to be agreed upon by Telkom and Eskom, the two state-owned shareholders.
Telkom a SNO shareholder? Surely they mean Transtel?

Transtel is part of Eskom. They own 15% of the SNO.

AFAIK 30% of the SNO is owned by the state. Half of which is Transtel. The other half I am not sure of. Someone fill in the gaps please. Not caring to do a google search.

I thought Transtel was part of Transnet. All I really want to make sure of is that telkom isnt a SNO shareholder like the article states.

This poses a good question though.

From all that I have read, is there anything that stop stops Telkom from buying out the SNO?

Why buy something if you can probably indirectly control it anyway. :)

expansion and elimination of competition.

Controlling it would be illegal, but owning it wouldnt.

horror - not possible as would (a) not get past ICASA and (b) not get prior approval from the DTI and competition authorities

probably would not be a bad thing in the long run as it may be what it takes tpo get a majority of SA cits off their arses
