Telkom threatens to cut off Sapo over R225-million bill

Telkom this week threatened to cut off communications services to the South African Post Office (Sapo) over an outstanding debt of over R225 million, Sunday Times reports.

Sapo CEO Nomkhita Mona warned Telkom's enterprise service division BCX that such a development could jeopardise the payment of social grants to around 10 million South Africans.

In that case they should fire you and put someone more competent in charge no?

Should never have made SAPO the social grants payment channel. Should have contracted BankServ.

Give it to postnet, lots of white folks took early retirement to start franchises like these.

One mans inability to provide services should be the next man's incentive to provide those services better & more economically.

I don't understand how sapo is supposed to pay telkom, if they issue grants then surely there must be a payment from government to sapo so they can pay telkom.

It's all still just arranging deck chairs though.

Postal services all over the world are going through the same essential problem: irrelevance.

That's an EXCELLENT reason to not be cut off, but the reason is for SAPO to PAY Telkom for the service they use and need. Maybe this is why SAPO is in such mess, they have their priorities back to front. If the get cut off it is NOT Telkom's fault, but SAPO's fault.

They obviously can't use the grant payments to pay their own expenses. The PO just distributes the grant money they receive from the government, but it's not their money to do with as they please.

That's not what I meant. They would have to be paid to do the service or funded, not the actual grant money itself although there was a story that they were using it at some point too.

Cut them off,
The Post Office is irrelevant and has been for a long time.

You are not incorrect, but are you trying to tell us SAPO wasn't brought to its knees by strikes, corruption and incompetence?

Why are all the other SOE's for example suffering from the exact same fate, are they also becoming irrelevant the world over?

Indeed, they can't get away with not paying Telkom. Telkom is listed with private investors with a legal team.
