Telkom throttling/Shaping on 30gig + 30gig LTE

This is a bit unfair from Telkom to start throttling or shaping bandwidth on capped packages. everything buffers, it takes ages to download anything through the google play store etc etc.. :mad: is this happening to everybody?

Telkom isn't throttling you, the towers are getting overcrowded and they don't have the manpower or knowledge to properly manage this as good as Vodacom and MTN yet.

Firstly, you need to determine what is going on, not just assume you are being throttled.

You mention PlayStore, so I assume you are using a Mobile device via Wi-Fi to your router.. This can also be a problem i.e. performance of your Wi-Fi.

The first thing you should do is connect a PC/Laptop directly to your Router and do a proper speedtest, then figure out if it is an intermittent issue or a consistent time-of-day issue etc.

I've got a 4MB ADSL line with Telkom and I find the same issue... Play store can be dog slow, and streaming a video from facebook would always buffer... When i do a speedtest though the speeds are perfectly fine. If I watch a Youtube video, I dont have hassles... Can become very annoying.

Thanks for the replies, my speedtests are as high as 30mb download and around 4mb upload. I've tested with my sim card in multiple devices and in different areas. downloading an app on the play store is at a constant 128kb per second since last weekend. no videos work anywhere except on youtube. it does not go any higher or lower than that. it doesn't matter what time of the day it is. there is definitely some sort of throttling going on.

if it were the towers, it would affect my speedtest's. it's definitely not a problem with my connectivity or router. something is going on in Telkom.

In that case, log a ticket with Telkom and have them send out a Technician. Can't think of anything else, except maybe testing in another location, just to confirm that there is no restriction set up specifically for your SIM.

I am sure they are throttling everybody. The day I phoned them I was told by Telkom that my night time (midnight) surfing I'll get normal speed but that was a big lie. What are we paying for? You only get to use half your data but still have to pay in full on your contract.

Here i am awake at 2am. My speedtests are up in the 30mb mark. Yet I'm throttled/shaped to around 128k even though i still have 28gb left of my 30gb nighttime. I've also given up with that call center of telkoms.

I feel your pain. I have the exact same issue also since last weekend. Telkom is not interested in helping you at all. They are lying thieves! Their call centres consist of human robots who cannot think for themselves.

I can assure you they are not shaping or atleast not on the uncapped LTE promotion. I can't see why they will leave the uncapped users to mad and shape the capped users. Just does not make sense.

What ip range are you getting? I feel 197. to be sluggish and 41. and 157. to be fast but maybe it's just my imagination. What is being shaped?

I tested google play and it is really fast on my side so not shaped at all on my uncapped package. In fact it downloads app so fast it almost immediatly goes to installing. :confused:

Speedtest results:
JHB: 46mb DL, 6.4mb UL, 30ms ping
Washington, US: 14mb DL, 2.6mb UL, ping 270ms
No Unotelly or other DNS service.

50gb capped package
http download: 21kbps, NNTP: 800kbps but that is with 50 connections.

Something is very wrong! :mad:

it's finally resolved. my connection is fixed. there was some sort of shaping from Telkom's side :D.

Cavedog it's been on the 41 range the last couple days so I can't confirm anything on that for you. the shaping was definitely apparent when using the google app store (fixed at 128kBs no matter what device or time of day). and on many various sites except YouTube (very weird).

can anybody else confirm if there's has been fixed?

After a 20 hour power failure care of City Power, everything seems to be working 100% again for me too.

Maybe the equipment at the tower just needed a reboot. :D

Funny enough, that's exactly what I think happened.
Service has been great for the last 8 months or so but without knowing exactly what the problem is, how does one fix it in future?
I suppose with winter coming, power cuts might be a regular occurrence again (silver lining)

I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do with the other parts of the broader Telkom network.
They are juggling a whole lot of balls in the air atm -- ADSL , VDSL , FIBRE , POTS , MATIS and so on
Your solution may have nothing to do with power ?
but
Perhaps some other part of the wider network got solved. ( robbing Gwede to pay Malema )
