Why?! Why would Telkom waste money on something that is readily and freely available from any number of sources? How can such a client hope to compete with IM, ICQ, Skype, Yahoo messenger, GoogleTalk etc. etc.? Haven't Telkom got any better R&D experiments to waste our money on? When you have stolen billions I guess you have to find fun stuff to do with it. Maybe a we can all look forward towards a Telkom browser and Telkom OS. Simply absurd.

Obviously they're aiming for the local market, but as ignacio says, it will/can never compete with Skype, MSN, GT etc.

It will work if they keep on with port priorization. Telscum making skype unusable for overseas calls and what do u know they launching their own service  I bet their service will work perfectly.

I suspect that maybe they could have their own version of skype out, but for local calls only. or maybe I'm just going mad.

I cant believe telkom does anything without first identifying some sort of possible revenue.

Their 'skype out' would be charged at higher than normal rates, count towards your cap and have worse quality than msn :p

I'll stick to GoogleTalk...

Telkom are trying to regain some of the revenue they are loosing because of the likes of Skype etc. They will more than likely come out with their 'out' version and proclaim to be doing the country a huge favour by dropping their prices ONLY if you use ADSL and pay Telkom the magic line rental fee.

Just think if Telkom can secure a million ADSL users, all paying this rental fee, even if they don't choose Telkom as their Adsl ISP......they will generate R300,000,000.00. It will take many more average homes to generate that sort of income from telephone line rental and call charges.

This is why it is crucial that ICASA abolish the ADSL line rental fee. We need the ISP's all playing on level playing fields. Many of them will be buying their int. bandwidth from SNO when it opens its doors.

Telkom see the writing on the wall with the advent of all this free P2P Voip, and they have to do something...................what will ICASA do?

ROFLMAO!!! :D

A telkom IM client! LOL!

AHhahahaha what a bunch of sucker fools!
What are they trying to achieve?
Can they honestly not see that this be be an utter failure?
We have a free choice when it comes to IM clients : Skype, googletalk etc. and that means they will have to compete ! BWHAHAHA

AND - they will probably charge "software rental" for the client as well ;)

OR

they'll charge per message

I can see it: "IM-More time" 50% reduction in chat charges after 7 every night! :p

They'll have a "message cap"

3000 IM's and you're capped to one, 50 word message every day

And more that 2 messages per day will be deemed abuse of the system :)

To invite a second person to the chat, you have to buy the upgraded "unshaped" version of the program!

The telkom operating system, uses twice your systems resouces during peak time. 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company, that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

When you get online...
# You have been online for 45 minutes. Do you want to stay online? Please respond within 10 min. or you will be logged off.
# You have been online for 135 minutes. Not to put any pressure on you, but there ARE other people in the world who would like to sign on. Let's show some sorry consideration for our fellow members and sign off, whaddya say?
# You DO realize that you've been online for 184 minutes, right? when was the last time you went outside?
# OK. This is getting ridiculous. If you sign off now, we'll bring back your Buddy List OK? yep finally
# You have been online for 360 minutes now!! We promised you unlimited time, we know, but can't you just finish up NOW and go read a good book?
# You have been online for 467 minutes. Do you remember your family members' names ?
# You have been online for 513 minutes. Your husband has left you and your dog is starving. Do you wish to remain online?
# You have been online 724 minutes. Steve white is coming personally to your house to yank the phone cord....
# You have been online 852 minutes, do you KNOW how many HOURS that is?"
# You have been online for 921 minutes. Do you realize that Telkom averages 921 complaints per hour about busy phone lines?

Obviously their service would be unshaped while others would be fair game.

Please provide your feedback on this type of IM Platform ??

Telkom could actually do really well with this product locally... I mean they'd just advertise for it tons like they've been doing for ADSL at the mo, and people they no jack sh*t about other IM clients will use it and fall into the trap :D
