Surely what is unfair, even while recognising different divisions within Telkom, is that they will still make money off every ADSL connection through line rentals. Other ISPs are needing to survive off data sales. If Telkom really wants to be fair and cut consumer costs then sort out that compulsory line rental cost.

I suggest that people wait to see how the products are implemented before taking any decision.

We often see that delivery and expectation differ by orders of magnitude.

Or the other companies can build their own ADSL networks, if they consider it to be such a cheap and profitable business...

Question: Currently I'm connecting at 8152 kbps and using some basic Telkom ISP package that gives me 10 gig per month. If I wanted to get that speed would I need the 10 meg line package? Reason I ask this is because on MWEB with their R539 4 meg uncapped package I can still get those speeds.

Great, so you think the line rental cost is awesome then and should remain as is?

The pots line rental is for the upkeep of the copper. Don't know why this is so hard to understand.

It is actually extremely simple to understand. Care to point me in the direction of a study that justifies the value of this cost though.

Ask ICASA for the information. Telkom has to supply it to them every year as part of their regulatory accounts.

^ not sure how close to justifying the value of line costing the ICASA data gets to. My reading of almost all of the data I have seen is that the average cost for copper running from the exchange to premises is R400 VAT and great inefficiencies inclusive which leads me to ask how when the same physical line is used your costing for ADSL 10Mbs coupled with POTS what it is.

I am afraid that Telkom is both being bilked by having to provide services where it isn't viable and bilking the public (and businesses) on the line rental overcharge when it comes to high end DSL services and not providing line access at that price to other market participants who would either have to enter (and start installing equipment) or have to explain why they aren't using the provided last mile access.

Telkom Internet is really on the ball and all and all Telkom is becoming the least evil of the evils in the market.
