So I saw this at Cavendish yesterday...
IMG-20130929-00040.jpg
They are bundling their product with a TV that is internet enabled. Thats fine... but then why in the advert do they show a whole bunch of services that you can't actually (legaly) get in SA ?

Are you supposed to get an internet enabled TV so that you can surf FB and post on twitter ? I think not. I suppose you can look at TED talks and YouTube vids but then whats the point of showing Netflix, iPlayer and all the other cool stuff that you can't actually get.

False advertising if you ask me ?

Or are they saying that its going to be available ?

It is fake advertising if you ask me, too. They going to mislead people netflix works but it doesn't (without some work around).

Unless if Telkom is in some talks to get NetFlix working on their network at least...

What's the "broadband" deal?

I think its just basically you pay an extra R262 on your current monthly cost and get a TV.

What ever product they are bundling it with is around R400 so is probably 2 or 4 meg line, probably capped.

Not really useful for Netflix either..

Ask Samsung. It's their "smart" tv.

Samsung offer the service no problem... its the local guys that need to step up.

Samsung are the ones advertising Netflix on their TV's in SA. Not Telkom. Telkom just advertise that you get one of Samsungs "smart" TV's with their service

Whoever set the ad likely wouldn't know what Netflix is. No excuse of course, but I doubt it's wilful.

I guess you can still lodge a complaint with the ASA as it is technically misleading.

Its a Telkom advert.

Also the heading is "Rethink home entertainment", that kind of implies that they are offering things like Netflix

Lots of 'probably' s there. Rather just say you don't know.

As for you OP, I don't think you can blame Telkom. They are just advertising the features of the TV.

I don't think Telkom are intentionally trying to mislead the consumer in this case.
Besides you can always use a smart DNS service to get the Netflix app working, they
are quite easy to setup.

I have Hulu on my PS3 and Netflix on my SmartTV all running through my eleDNS
service.

Yes, I know you can get it. I have Hulu, Netflix and all the other service they offer in that pic.

The point is that those services are not allowed to be used in SA, at least not officially.

So how can Telkom (or Samsung) use them to sell their product in SA ?

Seems a bit of a pointless argument unless they've skrewed you or something.
What difference does it make?

Telkom is now making the purchase of Samsung Smart TVs possible over a term contract (32" for R262): http://residential.telkom.co.za/equipment-devices/smart-tv/
they also have a bundle product for R661 for the 32" TV which they are advertising:
5GB + 5GB promotional data* & up to 1Mbps broadband
Free Wi-Fi modem
Home line rental, including free evening and weekend Telkom to Telkom landline calls
Free line & DSL installation for new customers
Free DSL self-installation for existing customers
Free delivery and installation of Smart TV within 7 days
Free Prepaid Internet Starter Pack (3G USB modem and 200MB mobile data pm x 12)*
Free Internet data to Samsung Video Hub content*
I suspect - but haven't double checked the maths - that if you already have bundled up with Telkom its the same sort of discounting and so if you want a SmartTV its a good case to bolt on. With some of Telkom's promotions (my HP Laptop for example) the price over term is less than what is available retail but I doubt that is the case here.

A reasonable person will see on the TV screen apps for USA Today and realize that it is generic apps for an international market and so no guarantee that all applications will work in SA. The advert is for the Samsung Smart TV and so as has been pointed out the question is whether Samsung can advertise Netflix capabilities without additional disclaimer in SA and I think they can.
