Hey guys

I would appreciate some help or feedback please.

My adult life has consisted of using telkom's fixed landline and then having my 4MB line... Now that I am moving back to Cape Town (Century City) I requested a landline, only for telkom informing me that there is no infrastructure available. They also said I should look into WCDMA... That is 3G, if I am correct.

Now the question is, as I need to change my whole approach - what do I do?

  1. I'd prefer having 60GB per month (I stream sports online and download certain movies/series).
  2. I have got my apple tv et al running as well, hence I require my home (flat) to be covered by wifi.
  3. In addition to that (nice to have) would be cool to have small dongle for my mac as well when I'm on the road? (Could always use my phone as a hotspot though).

What provide should one look into? What price range are we looking at? Will I be able to have my home covered by wifi when the signal comes via 3G or LTE to my router (I would assume it's possible, but I've got no idea what to look out for, or as mentioned what ISP to go through). Like everyone else, good speeds and reliability is my main concern.
Oh, I do not game - so that makes it hopefully a bit easier.

Any feedback is and will be appreciated, also, if these questions have been asked before I am sorry... It's just I am totally confused about this change and have got no idea what to look out for...

Regards
M

hi there

After giving it some more thought I came to the realisation that I do not need that much bandwidth. Perhaps 10GB per month? Budget I would say max R1000... The main objective is to be online though... You see how clue less I am? :/

I guess the main thing for me is just to be able to browse the net and emails, downloading would be a nice to have...

60gb per month over WCDMA?

You're insane dude...

Join the CPT WUG...throw like 1-3k at that once off for gear...and be chilled...the WUG guys don't react well to people with attitude. With a decent-ish internet connection and a WUG link you should be able to cover even intense downloading needs.

You could try the WISP route too...but WUG side will be a better long term (i.e. its a community while WISPs are a business).

Anything usage below 16/20GB makes 3G more viable than ADSL. There are several good promotions that are well withing your budget.

You could even go for a MiFi device that allows around 8 simultaneous connections.
Here's the Telkom Mobile promos: http://www.telkommobile.co.za/media/downloads/40099_Summer_Broadsheet_pdf_small.pdf

Do yourself a favor, stay away from Telkom, more importantly, stay away from their wcdma service. Look at getting a wisp instead, the service level will be closer to your fixed line than any wireless solution Telkom can offer.

Look into these guys
