Telkom wireless router security

Say you have a Telkom router that can also be a wireless router but you the PC is only connected by means of a network cable, no wireless configuration has been started yet, what are the security risks? Can someone in the close proximity access the Internet through your account.

What is the range of your typical Telkom wireless router?

you mean you have turned the wireless off?
Then they would need your account details or to plug directly into your router.

Make sure it is turned off, alternatively secure the wireless with MAC address filtering and/or encryption and passwords.

the proximity depends on the thickness of your walls, but generally the range of a normal house is about the limits of it

With a brand new wireless capable router, is the wireless functionality on/off by default?

Almost certain it is on by default.
Look at the lights on the router, is the WLAN light on?

Best bet is to log on and double check,
not sure how technical you are...so i will start with basics
click start, run,
type cmd and press enter
type ipconfig
note the default gateway ip address
open ur browser, type that ip into your browser.
The default username and password is usually written under neath the router (u can guess admin admin) it is usually it.
Go into the gui, look for wireless, and find the settings to turn it on or off

Thanks.

I'm suppose to be an able user. I have set up a wireless network in my classroom although quite a simplistic one. But i've always steered away from wireless technology hence my limited knowledge.

it's on by default and the Key is under the router. I would login and change your admin password or even make a new admin username and delete the admin or disable the account. (you can get hacked from the internet side easier if you leave the default password, and then they get your username and password which is stored on your router) If you use wireless change the SSID and change the security to WPA2, if you have to use WPA use AES enabled not TKIP. and use a long pass key...

You need to make sure wireless is turned off if ur not using it,it usually already has a password by default so i don't think anyone can just connect.once someone is connected to the router wireless they can connect to the internet and they can even change the routers password.they can find out your account username but not the password but the password is easy to figure out since it's only a 6 degit number (the username is usually very long)

And to be even more sure, unscrew the antenna and pack it away!

While on this subject, does the 105WR have an option for MAC filtering??

I have a client whose bandwidth was stolen by a guy that works a few offices away and I want to setup WPA & MAC filtering for additional security.

Where can one download a manual for these?
