One of my clients have a 4mbps ADSL line which always used to run at 6, but beginning of the week I noticed it was down to 4 again.

On the very same premises, (upstairs) a second line was installed by someone who rented the office space. This line ran at 10mbps from day one.

When I asked Telkom if the main line in the server room could be upgraded to 10mbps, they said it'll automatically happen. We weren't in a hurry as at 6mbps they were quite fine on an uncapped 4mbps account. (Overhead and all)

Now that pricing has come down and the demand for 10mbps has arrived, I checked and noted the downgrade to 4mb - so the client called Telkom to ask if they can be upgraded to 10mbps or atleast be reinstated to 6.

This morning I received the following email:

"...die vrou sê toe vir my, die area is 10Mbps beskikbaar maar ons lyn kan net 6Mbps hanteer, die rede is “you are too close to the exchange”. Volgens haar as ons upgrade na ‘n 10Mbps gaan ons net probleme hê want dan gaan die lyn baie drop. Hoop jy maak sin hieruit.

Sy het al die nodige gedoen, ek het die router afgeskakel en aangesit en aan haar kant wys dit nou 6Mbps.

Considering that the Telkom office is indeed just around the corner, it's definitely not a case of the Telkom lady mistakenly saying "too close".

According to Understanding-SNR-and-Attenuation-Rates

The following guide (distance vs. attenuation vs speed) gives you an guestimate what you can achieve:
<1km should be 23-24Mbit (nice speed, but doesn't it bug you that Telkom people walk through your bedroom?)
1.0km = 13.81dB = 23Mbit

Fortunately it's an office building so no harm no foul if Telkom people walk around there.
Will be contacting Telkom myself on Monday to get this resolved, even if the cable has to be extended and looped in a closet to make it work. :erm:

I've Googled and searched the forum for similar reports but came up empty handed. Has anyone else heard of this crap?

Fancy employing such an inept person to handle calls like that. She could not have been paying attention in class

He is talking bull try get hold of someone else at telkom or a manager. ADSL will work if you are a millimeter from the exchange.
