I was going to post that this defies comment, then I noticed that AdLo posted well past everyone's bedtime :D, anyways at the bottom of the 'telkomonopoly self-promotion' on their website, it says that Xolisa was responsible for issuing it...I think I would much rather see the original report from "SA Computer Magazine", and why was 3G from one or both of Vodacom & MTN not included in the comparison tables...

I assume that Xolisa/Telkomonopoly wrote this:
entry-level broadband product - HomeDSL 192
whoever wrote that should please stop sniffing glue - 192kbits/s is NOT broadband!!!

Me thinks they had the "affordable" 4gb unshaped package? Did not see anywhere where the article mentioned this 'small' difference.

And how about: "Installation can take up to a month". Up to a month!! Sure, if you are doing an article for them in SACM, otherwise, you can wait for the better part of a year, like I did - even when the previous occupant of my house had ADSL, so I KNOW the exchange is ADSL enabled.

Gaah.

What next, an article in Newsweek saying Planet Earth came out as the top planet humans beings like living on??

Alas, I can't seem to find the original article on the SACM website... (this could be because it's frighteningly early :p )

However, searching on SACM for the word "Telkom" reveals no less than 8 stories on how crap Telkom is in comparison to any other country not still using carrier pidgeons or tins-on-a-string.

I find it amazing that once again Telkom has published a statement which includes the words "gaming" and ADSL in close proximity... even after saying:

“Telkom's ADSL service was never intended for bandwidth-hungry applications, such as gaming or online trading"

It makes me want to cry... it honestly does.

"Still the cheapest landline in South Africa"
Yeah well, that's like saying Windows is "still the best Microsoft OS!"

Ok, but perhaps Telkom should state then what customers can use for gaming?

Hangon:

Source

The only issue I have is that consumers like myself that have a few gamers in the house will be penalised by a Per GB Billing for using local bandwidth to SAIX Gaming Servers.
A situation which should be addressed by Telkom.

Let's see. If I introduce a product into the market which is overpriced by 300% - 400% and the I reduce its price by 30% ...

I really don't think that most of the population are quite as stupid as Telkom seems to think that they are.

Stupid? No. Uninformed? Yes.

That is where the majority of the SA public is conned - by their lack of information.

The SACM report is in their July issue if i am not mistaken and they compared it to the likes of Sentech and Iburst as these were the only "true broadband" options avaliable.

I am in retail and let me tell you something.
I price my products to sell. No frills no whistles, just my cost plus my mark up. No Bulls..t.

I am afraid to say the general South African consumer is not that well informed.
They will run around for something that has a discount label on it.
Then tell me that they get X discount amount at Y store.
But when showing this same customer that my price is still cheaper even if store Y gives them X discount is often met with a blank disbelief look.
I have tried to explain that they are really being seduced by the discount and that it is really just marketing, but often just given up.

Hi guys

The SACM article stats and testing is certainly not accurate. I have started testing some of the services and the results are very far from what you will see in the SACM. 729 kbps average for iBurst and 667 kbps average speed on ADSL (512 Maximum)?? Need we say more? The writer has already apologized for the mistake in this article and it should be corrected in next month's magazine...

Regards,

RPM

rpm... has anyone ever told you that you kick ass? ;)

I'm glad SACM are going to fix stuff :) I wonder if I can get hold of the issue stil...
Now surely if SACM changes their article, Telkom will have to either get rid of their piece or change it accordingly.

To me the SACM site looks amateurish - phrases like "The local boradban forum MyADSL" and trademarked names like iTunes and iPod being mis-capitalized (Itunes/Ipod) - These are just on the frontpage.

By the time their correction comes through the damage will have been done - telkom's ad dept will have milked the source dry - No harm to SACM, think of all the free publicity telkom is going to give them.

There are a number of errors in there bwana... I liked the boradban as well :)

I wonder if there isn't a valid point out there that journalism is slipping? ;)

Nah perhaps it just wasn't correctly edited. I do agree though that Telkom is going to milk this as hard as possible

Also remember in such a small market such as South Africa most magazines doing tests will never be never be too critical of the products they are testing incase they loose advertising revenue... (If you read the article they are also not overly critical of Sentech and Iburst 80% ratings OMG)

Reminds me of when I was still in the electronics thing.

One of our clients had a buddy visit him - said buddy said he had white leds installed in his house for lighting instead of normal bulbs. He paid THOUSANDS of rand for led clusters which probably only cost a few hundred rand to import... he couldn't believe it when our client showed him a white led-unit which we only charged about R250 for - which we manufactured OURSELVES with imported leds, custom made PCB, and built-in 12V power supply. Somehow the people he got his lighting solution from made him believe that white leds are rare and expensive.

Yep... the SA consumer really is very much uninformed...
