I posed this question before, but what the hell does Ivy actually DO?! You never hear from her, unless it's for some racial slur, the SNO STILL hasn't been licensed.. wtf?!

If Telkom refuse to offer an ADSL service, surely then they cannot prevent someone else from providing the service. Okay they may say that they own the copper wire that comes into your house. I would say that ICASA should nationalise(not usually a fan of nationalisation) the copper and then auction it off to the industry or lease it to the industry.

It would be a traumatic period of transition, but at the end of it we will be better off without Telkom's involvment in ADSL and them behaving like a bunch of thugs and holding our country to ransom.

This statement by Telkom is a clear indication of their attitude to their customers and to attempts by South Africans to get this country and the rest of this continent up to "speed" so that we have at least half a chance in competing with the rest of the world.

When you watch the next Telkom ad TV, try not to puke.

Lets see, not only is Telkom guilty of extortion, standing in the way of progress, deceiving the public, patronizing the regulator, but now they are blackmailing an entire nation!!!!! Blackmailing one person is against the law, you think they can be sentenced to death for blackmailing millions?

ICASA should use this threat to immediately open up all communication facilities to all comers in the interest of national security. No private company should be allowed to threaten a country like this. Confiscate their insane profits and infrastructure(payed for mostly by the taxpayers themselves) immediately and utilise this to get other players started up. If I make a joke that I will plant a bomb, I will be sentenced to a serious term in jail. Open up, we never wanted them to be our supplier in any event, they are the ones that always used legalese to protect their dominant position. In fact, the press should now go all out and find out whether top management agrees with the comments made by White and company. If not, Telkom must censure them publicly, demote them and save us more of their uninformed rubbish speak, or else we know that an organisation such as Telkom cannot be trusted with our most important infrastructure(paid for by mostly public money)

Its nice to see Telkom are ****ting themselves.

This report has clearly caught them off guard, and it looks like their marketing department must have gone on vacation.

The sheer stupidity of their statements to the press is awe inspiring.

Well done Telkom - its nice to see you showing your true colours as the draconian, economy-stifling hindrance to this country that you really are. Mr White and Mr Vapi -- how do you sleep at night? I hope your salaries ease your consciences.

I've suggested this to Carte Blanche as a story idea. You can submit story ideas via their web site (www.carteblanche.co.za). If enough people suggest the story then we might see something on tv about this fiasco soon. :)

What this situation indicates is an urgent need to unbundle the local loop as Telkom cannot be the only ADSL provider, its just not right.

They can do what they want while the major shareholder, Government, sits back and does nothing. That's probably to be expected though, judging from past performance.

why is it that the media are only provinding info from/about telskum.... why is no one interviewing our minister or the president? I would really like to hear what government has to say about all this.

Telkom might have ****ed themselves, but at the same time they have the country by the gonads. That is the one really cool thing about being a monopoly. If they live upto thier threat then who is to stop them? We as a country need the new technology as plenty of SMEs (who the goverment is coddeling) are currently relying on it.

So it is a catch 22. Personally I think that the goverment should auction off thier share of the SAT3 cable as well as the current Telkom infrastructure to the SNO (or whoever will take it.). This is about the only way that the goverment (and or ICASA) can really hurt Telkom in it's current state. However personally i think this is more of a bluff than anything else. No-one can be that daft... *looks around the office* .., okay maybe they can.

I think they've just given the gov sufficient reason, and ammunition, to unbundle the local loop and nationalize SAT3/SAFE. Otherwise Telkom will be blackmailing the nation forever. Why not break up the monopoly full stop?

I think Telkom may have shafted themselves completely with these reckless threats.

I really, REALLY hope so.
