Hi all

Just a quick question what is Telkoms DSL subnet mask ? do they have more than one ?
(hope it is not a really dumb question, very new to networking :) )

I just checked , ipconfig /all and found the subnet to be 255.255.255.255. Is this right? How does one find a sunbet otherwise?

Thanks

ok there are 3 possible awns to that Q

1)the subnet mask you put in your setup is 255.255.255.255 (/32) as you are assigned a single address should you use and other mask connectivity will not be able to be established between you and and you and any other ADSL user in that mask
2)the mask used to describe all ADSL addresess is 255.255.0.0 (/16) the network address is 165.165.0.0
3)the mask used to describe capped/uncapped users is 255.255.128.0 (/20) the base addreses are 165.165.0.0 and 165.165.128.0 respectivly.

Jon Snow,

The subnet mask you are getting from ipconfig is actually correct for that connection. Since the PPPoE connection which you use to get internet access is a virtual point to point connection, it can not have a subnet mask of anything other than 255.255.255.255. This is because, to reach other machines on the ADSL network, your packets must first pass through the PPPoE server for routing. If the subnet were set to anything else, your machine would try to contact other ADSL connected hosts as if they were on the same physical network, in other words, the packets would not contain routing information, and would just go nowhere.

Capped addys can also be 165.165.50.xxx or 165.165.51.xxx

I am sure there are others...

Cheers
