Temu vs Makro — Why SA retailers should watch out

A MyBroadband Forum member's recent contradictory experiences with orders placed on Chinese e-commerce marketplace Temu and Makro's online store could serve as a cautionary tale to South African retailers.

The forum member ordered three items from Temu — a magnifying glass with an adjustable stand, soldering flux paste, and multi-function wire-stripping pliers — on Thursday, 25 January 2024.

My parcels arrive quicker from Temu than from local businesses.

I placed an order for car spares (and paid) on 20/2 from a business in Cape Town and they still haven't send the parts.

How can anybody expect us to support local if the service is so bad?
 
Even Amazon US has been faster many times than ordering local. Takealot has been better but standing at their collection point with no one around and employees walking by seeing a queue and calling no one really sours your support for buying local.

The Mackro ordeal is an easily recognisable SYMPTOM of post 1992+ by now, its like a corporate cancer throughout the World. Its not an easy fix, you have to fix the boardroom 1st in short.
 
I stopped ordering from Makro onlinr because they are just terrible. I am also confused why mRewards (or whatever it is called) can only be redeemed in store and not online.

I mean if there is one store that is trying to not do e-commerce it is definitely Makro.
 
Been getting temu ads, thought it was just another wish knock-off... but since some of you guys tried it, had a look and saw that they use Buffalo Shipping which I've always had great experience with!

Bought something small for R200, free delivery, let's see how it goes...
 
Shocking Makro experience! But, did we really expect more? In some ways, I could have thought as much.

Isn't minimum R300 for free delivery?
