Ten people killed in Free State crash as festive season kicks off

It reminds me of that tax boycott that people punt from time to time.

Just never going to happen for a myriad of reasons.

Just like people stopped relying on Eskom for their services, because it's unreliable and becoming unaffordable. As much as the Taxi industry is a power onto themselves if it becomes bad enough people will find a way to replace them.

I’m sorry that the reality of the situation hurt your feelings, I will try to be less honest and forthright in future.

Meh, I'm open for civilized conversation. But calling a person a twat because in your feeble mind you disagree. I don't have time for that. Enjoy your day.

In theory I agree.

In reality, minimum wage people, who are the main users of taxis, risk losing their jobs if they don't get to work.

They can't afford to Uber and alternatives at a similar price point won't magically appear. So they'll keep on using taxis, as the risk involved in using them is less than the risk involved in boycotting them.

It's not my fault you are totally disconnected from reality. Make stupid statements get stupid replies, it's just the way of life, best get used to it... snowflake

Those 9 people probably should have told the driver to slow down, they would rather want to arrive alive then get to their destination 5min earlier.

Probably could have been worse if he drove into another Taxi, or a family in a car.
They don't dare telling the driver what to do,there will be repercussions.

Blaming the victim? What of they did but the driver couldn't care less what they were saying?

You're disgusting.

The faster they can get to their destination the faster they can load the next bunch of people.
I live right next to the R26 in the freestate, have pretty much seen first hand accounts of taxi's on the road anytime of the day during festive seasons.
I no longer drive on the road at night in general, let alone festive seasons. That entire road that is about 500km long. Sees maybe 4 traffic stops the entire stretch. The amounts of taxi's accidents on it is staggering during festive seasons.

accidents on perfectly straight sections as well.

Preferably WITH the golden star, fairy lights, decorative tinsel & shiny baubles still attached...

Why is there an angel at the top of the Christmas Tree?

One year, Santa procrastinated too much and had an hour to go over his naughty nice list.

He was in a cabin making some progress when he heard a knock on his door. "Santa, we need your help in the workshop!"

Frustrated, Santa yelled "I'm busy right now, handle it yourselves. I can't afford to be interrupted!" And slammed the door.

Not 15 minutes later another knock is heard and his agitation is climbing. He opens the door and yells "What?!"

It was Mrs. Claus and she said startled "I brought you some food."

His face tuning red, he says "I've got a half hour left to check this list, I can't be interrupted!" He then slammed the door on his wife. He then says "I swear, the next interruption I get I'll just lose it."

About 20 minutes passed when he heard a knock at the door. He stormed to the door with a burning hatred when he opened it. It was an angel holding a Christmas tree. "Hey Santa, where do you want this tree?"

Taxis are a very efficient public transportation system. I wouldn't want to change it much simply because the government won't be able to do better than what the market has already done.

https://irr.org.za/reports/occasion...outh-africas-minibus-taxi-industry-report.pdf

SA government could basically resolve all public transportation problems in the country by:
1) Allowing rail to become fully privatized and make it a service for the middle class.
2) Allocate the subsidies that the trains used to passenger vouchers that can only be redeemed by drivers of roadworthy vehicles. Something like a digital token, which gets linked to a vehicle when the passenger wants to redeem it. When the owner of a vehicle wants to redeem the tokens, they need to pass a basic roadworthy.

Solves two problems (roadworthiness, and transportation costs) with a bit of technology without imposing massive changes to an already functioning industry.

I don't believe that privatising what is essentially a monopoly leads to greater efficiency.

Taxis are a monopoly because of the government granting associations operating licences over routes. Not ideal, but given the state of law enforcement, having them enforce the law themselves is an Ankh Morpork solution.

They are very efficient in terms of pricing as they know their customers cannot pay high prices. They have almost price parity with subsidised public transport.

Read the report I posted.

Taxis are nowhere near as much of a monopoly as train services are.

Your voucher system for roadworthy taxis only, seems to be another of your impractical theories. Law enforcement isn't capable of enforcing existing traffic laws anyway, so adding additional complications would make little difference.

If you tried to privatise rail transport, you'd find that any interested party would claim the service would be unprofitable without huge fare increases and would demand government subsidies anyway, as has happened in other countries.

So great - we'd still have a monopoly, still with government subsidies or greatly inflated prices, but now with added dividend requirements.

Yay!
