Termination rate asymmetry “unjust”, Telkom Mobile to be "de-risked": report

CEO Sipho Maseko

Go and cry in your corner, idiot.

Time for Telkom to end Local call charges they've been charging for, for decades.
Other fixed-line operators, especially in the US have had local calls for free, forever (it seems).

Time for Telkom to end forced Line Rentals for anyone who wants only ADSL.

Time for Telkom to end the "Normal Jack" charge of what is now thievery at R13,74 pm + VAT for each jack in a house.

I'm sure more could be added to the list :whistling:

According to the report, Maseko said the mobile operators had unfairly benefited – and the “unjust” relationship needed to change.

Now the shoe is on the other foot is it? Telkom, please go complain to the Competition Commission that the dastardly competition is unfairly benefiting from Telkom's "benevolent" business practices.

Maseko appealed to Icasa to enable Telkom to charge more and compel cellular companies to charge less.

ICASA has been enabling Telkom to charge consumers more and more every year, curious that ICASA should erect a STOP sign in Telkom's path when Telkom wants to charge its competitors more.

According to Maseko, this means Telkom pays around R60 billion a year to terminate calls on cellular networks

Sounds a bit inflated to me, is that supposed to be billion, take back R60 billion from Vodacom and MTN and use the money to pay off SANRAL's debt and dismantle the gantries.

What has he done since taking over? Think about it....

Lol. Telkom pay 2% of our country's entire GDP on termination rates? :D

Scrap interconnection then everyone wins or make it the same price across the board.

Back in the day Telkom owned the monopoly - now days all they do is complain, complain.

I think his problem is valid but his solution is invalid. I mean really.. you want ICASA to allow you to charge more?? <<--- thats the problem right there! instead of going scrap the miss value he suggests increasing his ability to increase cost because then they can recoup costs and show profit. Typical SA mentality, consumer must just lube up and our infamous (I)CASA who don't deserve the I will likely do so instead of dropping it like they should have because of the clout there is. Sorry to incumbent mobile operators but your reign is coming to end with less political people invested me thinks.

I actually suspect that increasing the termination rate on "fixed" calls from "mobile" origination will actually see the consumer score. Look at the current situation - it is no cheaper to call from MTN - Telkom_Fixed than from MTN - Vodacom but the termination rate has the effect that MTN pockets the difference in a call made by a customer to a Telkom. Now Telkom_Mobile as I understand it has asymmetric benefit together with CellC as smaller entrants - so from Telkom's bottom line perspective it is best for the company to have everybody phoning to TelkomMobile.

If Telkom_Fixed terminating calls saw Telkom getting revenue that reflects true network costs then the voice revenue for Telkom's copper network would be significantly higher and in fact the company would be able to offer significantly more value on voice lines - there would be incentive for people to have landlines.

There should be one termination rate for voice traffic and that rate should if it is fixed reflect the cost which the terminating network realistically incurs in the last leg.
