Tesla and South Africa... How do we make it happen?

Alright so back to the topic at hand.

I think I would agree that the way to convince anyone at Tesla would be to show there is demand in SA for their product.

What are the real conclusions about tax? How does Haval and GWM still land cars cheaply when they don't manufacture here?

I imagine the best bet will be Tesla China sending cars to SA so don't think they will be too harshly disadvantaged vs others and not at all vs other Chinese EVs

... Go on? If you have the answer give it?
0% duty on the polluting <1L cars from Europe. Hence the 998cc stuff you see...

Whereas the EV's are taxed to the hilt.
There lies the issue.

Will be interesting once China gets more cars in more places. European car companies and American car companies (excluding Tesla, who's already ahead of most of the incumbents) are going to have a bit of a shock, and need to re-evaluate pricing.

I think this is the year the prices tumble.

Also thought I'd link back to mybb

Nothing from stopping you from importing one.

left hand drive cars wont be allowed into the country - not sure if those are made anywhere in right hand drive

besides why worry about Tesla when there are other EV cars already being sold in this country - Tesla is not really comparable to the other luxury vehicles that the opening poster talked about as being expensive and IMHO Tesla wont be worth the premium for paying the extra import duties and Vat etc to bring one in - it would all be a fools errand IMHO

The country of manufacture does not determine if it is RHD or not... Flip guys come on listen to yourself.

And again for the people at the back. This isnt about all EVs it's about Teslas.
Why. Because of FSD. And because we have audis and bmws so why would you not think there is space for a premium EV.?

BYD aren't premium... Yet.

Okay. Let’s focus on this point first and foremost as it’s the cornerstone of your motivation for Tesla in SA.

Do you believe the feature would work on our roads and in our environment?

Think taxis, pots holes, shitty drivers everywhere. Broken robots. Lots of 4 way stops. Etc etc?

Not even the UK has FSD as yet.

Well, it never will until they start the neural nets learning about SA specific stuff. So when's the best time to plant this tree?

You know, I'm not going to read 5 pages so if someone already mentioned this, apologies.

If you REALLY want to do this, open a Twitter account. Start following the fanboy Tesla accounts, see which accounts he interacts with most, and start spamming those accounts to get one of them to ask him about Tesla South Africa in one of the Twitter spaces he joins.

It would be much more fruitful than having a mybb thread about it.

So Tesla opens its doors in SA January 2025.
How many cars will they sell per annum, at best?

You can have all the left hand drive cars imported you want.

You just won’t be able to register them for use on SA roads.

No one wants that, it's a false situation. Learn to help rather than hinder.

Ha ha ha ha.

That’s more than the entire populace of EV’s in the country at present.

Maybe a 100 on average.

Yeh. And in 1990 you could have said why would Vodacom setup there's a total of 100 car phones sold, it's all land lines.
