Tesla and South Africa... How do we make it happen?

Your link is a year old.

I'd imagine when most people think Hilux they're thinking of the double cabs, not the single cabs. From https://www.toyota.co.za/hilux the cheapest single cab Hilux starts from R356k, whilst the cheapest double cab starts from R524k. The most expensive double cab starts from R1.023m.
So not far from what I said then? Or does everyone buy hi end hilux? Most will be trade vehicles you realise not soccer mom cars!

And again that's why Teslas/EVs are good. I think they could easily find a place between the fancy BMWS and Fortuners and Volvo CXs drive around fancy schools in Cape Town...

Pricey yes. Like the above. But ultimately never have to visit Engen or a dealership again... Very tempting!

I’m curious. Have you ever sat in a Tesla or driven one?

Actually... Being a bit sarcastic about the Suzuki. Hadn't realised the top model was hilux, then Ranger then Suzuki swift. Starting to realise why so many Hiluxs are sold, they seem to be only 300-500k. That's like half the price they are in other countries...

Things like Fortuners or Volvos. You see a lot of them in the cities of SA. They are R1m plus it's those kind of semi luxury soccer mum cars I think could be ripe for a bit of market share gain.

Anyone know where to get volumes by models past the top 10?

I think you are horribly mistaken about the potential market for a Tesla in this country.

Even if you just throw away any EV/Luxury vehicle tax, a base model Model 3 is going to hit you around R1.2m. If you give me the option of a base model vehicle vs a top of the range Hilux Double Cab and R200k savings, I'm taking the Hilux.

In the UK a new base model 3 will set you back R950k

Add in the basic vehicle duties in SA and you will get to around R1.2m since Tesla has no local manufacturing and export capability it is unable to offset those duties against export credits.

But even at R950k, you give me the option between a base model 3 and a Ford Ranger Wildtrak. Guess which one I'm choosing.

I reckon the large majority of EVs sold in the UK are salary sacrifice leases. The tax benefits are huge. The government is paying for 60% of my monthly lease...

When you take the supercharger network into account there's nothing close imho
What is the benefit of this?
I think they stopped the free charging or even giving a limited amount of miles free charging

Interesting. I have considered PCP (I believe that's what it is called) did not know about the tax benefits. Where can I read more about this?

Well for a start the superchargers cost about half what other public charging networks cost.

The supercharging is designed into the car's navigation system and the system works out the minimum you need to complete your journey. It knows that an empty battery charges takes charge on much quicker, so it optimises journey time by keeping the battery as low as possible.
So I just put my trip into the computer and it guides me via the necessary chargers and tells me how long I'll stop at each one. You get a push notification on your phone as soon as you have enough charge to continue your planned journey. If you're stopping for a pee and a cup of coffee, generally that's enough time. I reckon it's been in the region of 10 minutes, with the longest so far being half an hour (arrived at the charger on 8% battery, had 150 miles left to travel, and it was an old generation charger so only did 65kw. You get to your destination with in the region of 10% battery, and then you plug into your home charger and fill up on super cheap electrons. (I pay 7.5p per kwh)

Pcp is not the same.
It's something your company has to sign up for, then the EV becomes a taxable benefit, paid for by a salary sacrifice, but the benefit in kind tax rate on EV leases is 2%
There's a benefit for the employer as well, as their NI bill decreases too.

Utterly useless to me without CarPlay though.

am curious about what was suggested on top gear once, what if somebody unplugs it during its 8 hour charge, and you get into it and it shows 2%,

They'd have to have unplugged it right at the beginning of the charge for it to be 2%. On a 7kw charger it adds 32 miles of range per hour.
The charge cable also locks into the port.
One thing possible I guess on my install is that they could switch off the breaker for the charger as it's right next to it. I could put a padlock on it though... but people aren't poe5es here :D

I also get a push notification if the car's parked at home with less than 80% charge and no charger connected.

Why though? What do you need CarPlay for when the car's nav system is great, it has spotify, netflix, youtube and twitch built in, hell it even has Zoom...

It’s just kak and fails at basic integration every other car does out there.

Especially when CarPlay 2 comes around.

I’ve shot down a few others for failing this very simple thing because I simply won’t live without this now.

I don’t need any of those things I don’t use. I want it to work with the thing I already have.
