Tesla and South Africa... How do we make it happen?

It is not remotely feasible at all at this current stage of the game to build EV's here man.

We can talk again in 2-3 years pending some government changes and/or new battery tech.
Assemble here...

Tesla are good are setting up factories... Wonder if they are good working with SA Labour though!

Makes no difference. SA builds BMWs at the Rosslyn plant. And then “imports” them into SA, attracting the same tariffs.
Huh? What does that even mean?

Oh right... Yes the import tariffs dont actually help anyone, because it just means all manufacturers charge as if they are imported even when they aren't!

This is the same for imported vehicles. They aren't priced based on the cost of the materials and imports they are priced based on what people WILL PAY.

If there is a glut of EVs then they will get dumped in SA, maybe even at lower prices.

Already here.

So who will service it or repair it if its broken?

Best just to buy the Mercedes or BMW. Mercedes EQE Sedan about same price.

Honestly I would probs opt for the EQB at about R1 million. Sure the range is about 80 miles less than the Tesla, but its just more local with warranty and support.

Well it leaves via ship and arrives the next port, and drumroll....its imported.

When they make them at Rosslyn, they would not then need to pay import duties... Why do you think they would? Is it someone pulling the wool over your eyes on taxes/prices?

Completely agree. Paying full whack for a Tesla with no support would be silly.. Thus the thread!
How do we get a dealership equivalent started in SA...
It never happens until it does.

We must send some backyard mechanics off to Tesla in the USA or to China to figure out how the car works.

From there on we can launch a dealership here.

Why? Because backyard mechanics was the reason landrover has survived so long.

It's the parts importing, software etc...

Backyard isn't the issue... Backend is!

It's one thing wanting it (the brand) to come here & a whole other moerse story putting your bucks on the line.

Come crunch time will/would you? Assuming it was offered at a relatively reasonable price that is.

Yup definitely.

Holding out from replacing my current car!

It's tricky when somebody begs for a specific brand that'll likely make them pay out the booty (1.5m+) for basically the same functionality and specs as a R800k Volvo..... it's not like Tesla has the charging infrastructure advantage here that they have elsewhere. So the only reason to buy a Tesla is to Instagram brag. And look like your favourite influencer 😄

Full self driving... Come on read the thread!

You mean the full self driving that isn't actually full self driving and costs 15000USD as an option?
That is also illegal in SA, Merc/BMW has to remove all self park options when they enter SA, some stupid law that states no car is allowed to idle when there is no one behind the wheel.

There 2 sides to Tesla's FSD:

- The fanboys side
- The actual truth/side
We dont have the power to charge an EV. Solar charging EV's are iffy as in you need chargers and space where people work. there is no sun to charge after work...

Also they are power hungry, current wire gauge is nowhere near EV charge requirements rating...

I was specifically talking about the FSD, that is something one can measure objectively.

The points you raise are general focused & can shift somewhat depending on a person's setup & requirements.
