Hi there,

Just wondering if there might be other local enthusiasts who have built or are building Tesla Coils?

I tried building one when Iwas still young . Failed spectacularly . Keep us posted. I did build a tesla one time unintentionally when a screwdrive went itto the wrong place haha . Blew up half the board rated at 2000A . Lucky for me was wearing the correct PPE

I did when I was younger using CRT screen transformers.

Why/How I am still alive I don't know.

The further I am from one, the better...
Played with a few big ones at varsity. And as is usual, one does silly things... Like have "light saber wars" of the long tube florescent kind.
I touched both terminals at the bottom of the tube with my palm and got a jolt of Nikola Tesla revenge. I still have the burn marks where they arced through my flesh.

The noise that comes off one is enough to instill the fear of God in you. BIBLICAL!
One can only imagine what the one at Tesla's lab sounded like... big enough to transmit power to a nearby town. I can just imagine the skyline at night too... No wonder people thought he was a wizard!

I build all kinds of high voltage stuff all the time.

A Tesla coil is just not strong enough for me.

I am trying to get an old pole transformer, the idea being to ballast it and run it in reverse to take 230V AC from the plug to 11kV at around 10A on the other side. Blowing stuff up with that is really cool, it allows you to try stuff you cannot do with the Eishkom power grid i.e. throwing "bloudraad" on an HV overhead line to see what happens.

Not trying that. you will wreck at least 6 Eskom generators. AND WEE NEED THEM!

10A @ 11kv is 480A @ 230v need power of 8 houses to power that beast, now charging a cap with it will be spectacular :)

Indeed.
In any case when it is experiment time, I have tripped the 80A breaker in the meter compartment outside at least once.

Ok, so ...does anyone have any idea where the local amateur scientists hang out?

The time has come for me to attempt to find a good home for my Tesla Coil as I am emigrating, so if anyone knows anyone who may be interested and (preferably) has a working knowledge of high voltage devices etc. PLEASE let me know!?
