Well done dude! What made you pick those choices?

me sitting at position 307 :)))))) would think the reason was that all his shares cost him 1c/share, so basically they could not drop (yes, I know....)

If you take a look at the volume traded of those shares, it would astound me if the portfolio could be sold at the present market price..

Well done dude! What made you pick those choices?

I picked the 5 cheapest shares and looked at the price history for the last month. Then I put most of my cash in the most volatile one when it hit 1c. So now I experience only the upside volatility.

It doesn't match reality but it helps me beat the game and stay on top.

I am the 2c guy and I've been fixed at number 1 for well over a month now :)

Disclaimer: As this game is educational, and some people have thought this might be an idea in reality I've had to publish this disclaimer. Achieving growth like this using these shares in reality is simply not possible. These shares simply don't trade often enough. Don't try this at home folks. SaiyanZ has found a way to beat the game, but the stock market would in all actuality leave him with a massive loss in the real world. So much for you being number 1

Someone did the same thing as Saiyanz in a game where there was 100K up as a prize I think and after an investigation they where disqualified. I am assuming that he buys the shares for real in small quantities to be at the top of the board.

Rules of the game should state that you are not allowed to manipulate real world prices to win the game.

I actually forgot about the game; I didn't buy shares last month or this month. So I'm now down to 16. As my previous two purchases (June/July) are my only loss-makers, it might be a good thing that I forgot, otherwise I might have been down even further!

Finally breaking even again, no thanks to Crapitec (Ironically, I plane on opening a savings account with them this month so I can save up for a major overseas vacation next yeat).

Congratulations to the 2013 Challenge leaders, notably qriffin, AMT and DGrobbs. Full details of last years competition results can be found here: http://www.investorchallenge.co.za/and-the-2013-investor-challenge-winner-is/

Now the Investor Challenge 2014 has begun. Note that unlike last year, in the 2014 challenge selling of your shares is allowed, however you will be taxed on your profits in the leader-board. For the purposes of the competition, we will assume all competitors are in the in the 30% tax bracket, and all profits will be taxed at that rate. Your net worth is calculated by adding the value of your portfolio at slightly delayed prices, to your cash on hand, and then subtracting 30% from the net profit of sales.

I haven't been following this thread but what happened to my profile? Logged in now and all my shares are gone and I don't even see the MyBroadband group anymore...

Was my account deleted due to inactivity or what?

The contest ended on the 20th of December, and a new one started yesterday, with a clean slate for you to pick shares. You can also sell now. If you look at the menu on top you'll see the 2013 results, all your holdings from 2013 are still there :)

You were clearly taking the piss :D

No I was seriously playing!

Just really, really bad choices :

I listened to someone that said Ellies was a good buy - but it tanked 30% in a few months!
The other was Massmart which was a large and (supposedly) stable purchase - it tanked 25%

There's no coming back from that, no matter how good the rest are

On the bright side, you never bought Ellies with real cash like an unfortunate buddy of mine
